As for Mark Drew - pure quality and scored from free-kicks form upto 40 years!
That’s pretty special - free kicks that fly through time and space!

At Victory Park we’ll miss the massive Coyne, he’s a brute. Watch out the the card collection he’ll pickup during the season.
As for Mark Drew - pure quality and scored from free-kicks form upto 40 years! Unfortunately you signing him won’t be simple, as he’s under contract at Chorley. He signed last season and the club had an option for a further season, which the club took up in the summer. But it looks like Mark forgot this little detail until he spoke to our gaffa Tony Hesketh today! Expect a strongly worded letter of complaint to the league and FA!
What have you got to write to the FA or the league about?
He’s not played an F.A. nor a League game for us, just a friendly. If he had signed for us, then this could be a different matter. How were we to know that he was under contract at Chorley, if obviosly from your post, Mark Drew himself didn’t know until he spoke to your gaffa?
TONY EVANS HAS SIGNED FOR BURSCOUGH.

As previously posted - you have no grounds to complain about anything. However, an option is exactly that - for both parties. It will be interesting to see if Mark has signed his extension or not. If he hasn’t and the club has just decided that he will be under contract for another season - well it doesn’t quite work like that…
Greenie, I think you will find that if Chorley had an option on Mark Drew and they informed the player within 7 days of the end of last season that they can command a fee for the player.
Generally, the option is only one way and favours the club.
Without going into too much detail on recent events at Witton it appears that you have lost out on a considerable amount of money as you didn’t write to the players offering them either new deals or exercising the option with that 7 days period.
I have these facts direct from the FA by the way.
Jimdix,
The reason why Witton didn’t write to the FA was because our Football Secretary was on holiday, this task was passed (as in previous seasons) to our manager. He obviously had another agenda, and didn’t send the letters. He then acted as ana gent for the players, fixing them up with teams in higher leagues. It has been suggested, but not proved, that our ex-manager received a percentage of their signing on fees for their new clubs.

My post was in relation to Greenies post Thatched and as I say, I don’t want to dig up the past as you Wittoners have moved on and rightly so. The fact is that if Chorley exercised the right of their option on Mark Drew and applied the correct proceedure then Mark Drew shouldn’t have played for you against Alsager on Saturday as he was contracted to Chorley. However, if they hadn’t proceeded with the correct paperwork then he is a free agent. It makes no difference whether Mark Drew has signed his option or not if they have! I hope nothing comes off this but I know Ashton Utd were told not to play an ex-Witton player until this type of situation had been cleared up…
Jim, you have to question why the player would turn up to play if he believed he was under contract and equally why we would play him if we were aware of the situation. It may be that he was not forthcoming with the information? You seem to be pretty well informed regards the situation so perhaps you know what the player has said in regards to why he played?
As you pointed out I think the situation will be cleared up quite quickly, he either is under contract to you and therefore remains your player (in which case we could agree a fee for his transfer if we felt it worthwhile), or he is not under contract and therefore able to move clubs!!! It is not going to be anymore complicated than that!
I don’t know the player in question so I don’t want to comment on his integrity. You are 100% correct that this should be cleared up pretty quickly. What I would say, rightly or wrongly if the player is under contract at his previous club Chorley then he shouldn’t have played for another team until an agreement is reached. Unfortunately a number of players don’t really appreciate what contracts mean. For example if a club exercise the right of an option on a player and they send the player the full details within seven days of the season ending and they have proof of postage then that player whether he likes it or not and whether he signs the form or he doesn’t, he IS contracted to that club.
It will be interesting to see what happens here and someone please correct me if I am wrong with all this contract talk.
It is a minefield and us supporters sometimes don’t know what is really happening behind the scenes at football clubs with all this type of stuff going on.
Oh yes, my name is Jim Dixon, I am 43 years of age and I live in Hyde. I follow all my local teams I go to watch whoever is at home and which game I think will be best. I came along to watch you play Curzon Ashton last season in the Unibond Cup game. I heard a rumour that Kieran Lugsden is signing for Droylsden - has he signed for you?
I don’t think you’ll find any disagreement that if the player was under contract to another club then he should not have played for us albeit a friendly game. Players should respect the contracts they sign and if said player was aware of the situation then he was wrong to play. Clearly if the player tells us he is in a position to play and not under any terms then to some degree we only have his word to go on. Only the player knows the true situation however from others reports he only became aware of this following a discussion with his manager (so maybe it was not so clear at least in his eyes).
Players should honour their contracts with clubs, unfortunately I believe there is too much player power in the game at the present time. When high profile players with four years on their contract start to publicly discuss tranfer moves then it does not help the game. As has been said before the player would expect to be paid (under the terms of their contract) if they we out injured for a season. Contracts work two ways, the clubs have to honour their commitments and so should the player.
To give Mark the benefit of the doubt in this instance he appears to have been somewhat in the dark over this otherwise I am sure he would not have put himself forward for selection.
As for Kieran Lugsden signing, I wouldn’t like to comment as I do not know what his contract situation is!!!
If only GE was around to stop us getting into these situations, then i’m sure this discussions wouldn’t be taking place…
i miss Graham.
Found this on the Chorley website:
Drew On Transfer List
Magpies boss Tony Hesketh has placed midfielder Mark Drew onto the transfer list following a telephone call from the 24-year-old saying he wants to join UniBond Premier League club Witton Albion.
Hesketh said: “As he is a contracted player with Chorley, we hold his registration and if he moves we would expect a fee for him.
“I am disappointed in Mark, but if he doesn’t want to play for us, then he’s not part of my plans."
Drew joined Chorley from Rossendale United in November 2007 and in 19 appearances scored 6 goals, most of them spectacular strikes.
I wonder where he may turn up?
Have I missed something or has JV struck again…
Number 3 for Halifax on Saturday was Matt Awang. Was this not the same player who came on against Alsager and looked decent?!?!?!
knowin JV ya prob right !
is he “mattone awang” who played for liverpool youth team
Yes to both questions!!!
I see Junior Brown has also popped up over there, has the man no scope to find new players, almost reminds me of a leech/parasite.
But what amazes me most is when players are released publicly (i.e. Adam Morning for being a liability to the team at that stage of the season) they sign for the man that released them because he can wave large weekly pay packets they forget. Mercinaries, no class or self esteem, is my opinion.
The power of the pound!!!
I am helping Pete Riley pick up many of Graham Edgeley’s tasks. Having had a 2 hour meeting with Graham, I can assure you that this is no easy task, as you will be amased at how many jobs Graham undertook for this club.
One of his tasks was to fill all the paper work in for signing on players.
Peter has undertaken most of this work, with a little help from myself.
I know a lot of supporters are itching to know who exactly we have signed, what their attributes are, who they have played for etc, etc. (and even some pen pictures, so they can recognise them)
We do not want to make fools of ourselves annoucing we have signed players, only for somebody to gassump us with a better offer, so I ask for your patience in this matter.
Hopefully, in the next few days, Rabbit will be able to announce (once we have receipt from the Unibond League and the FA that they have excepted our registration forms) exactly who Nigel has signed for this club.
It is a cat and mouse game, and we will loose some players who have trained and played some friendlies for us. However, there will be some players that we have gained through this process.
All we can do is trust Nige and Andy to sign the right players for us. If one or two are attracted by money to play at a lower level, then so be it. Their actions in doing so says it all…they are not the right players for Witton Albion.
Watch this space!
Good post Thatched, there are lots of players still out and about looking for clubs at the moment.
The core squad list at the moment includes Smith, Scott, Donnelly, Pritch, Coyne, Dunne, Willis, Drew, Settle, Thornley, Skelton. There still may be changes but there is real strength coming together.
Hopefully Gaghan and one or two others will be added to this list in the coming week or two. Also it is worth remembering that there will come a next wave of players available at league and non-league level in the first few weeks of the season. Some players will find it does not work out at their new club and others will be put out on loan, in the past players like Macca, Warlow and Thornley have come to us in the first month or two of the season rather than from the first week! You need a good squad from week one but also the ability to add to it if there are any weak points.
We do face the additional challenge this year that if a player has previously so much as worn a red shirt, walked through the streets of Northwich or knows where Witton Albion is, then they are likely to be approached by Halifax and offered more money! Whilst not particularly creative we can’t do a lot about it other than keep some of our cards close to our chest and look for players that want to play a league higher rather than for cash!
Be in no doubt that Nige will build a good solid team for next season, one that competes and plays football the right way.
