Dave Carrick

I’m not sure whether this is the right subject heading but I’m sure someone will place it in the correct section if necessary.

This coming Wednesday, 1st July, will mark the 20th anniversary of the passing of the finest footballer I ever had the privilege to see wear a Witton shirt.

It is hard to believe that it is twenty years since we said goodbye to the great Dave Carrick.

Many great memories of watching him still live with me to this day and he is someone who will always be missed but never forgotten.

Fully agree Wheels - my hero at the Central Ground. Most memorable goal was the bicycle kick from outside the area at the club end of the ground. Much better than Pele’s in ETV, which I think has been voted the best goal ever!

My all-time favourite Witton player, remembered with respect and affection.

Dave was a great lad too. Very talented footballer - remember him getting the ball on the halfway line and beating the whole defence and tapping it past the 'keeper. Think the opponents were Ormskirk but I’ll stand corrected.

He was also much better than his namesake Miro Caric - it took him 20 years to pass the ball to a colleague.

We’ve had some great players but we’ve also had some crap!

GE

Also, 100 times better than his namesake who continues to pull the wool over people’s eyes at OT!!!

Part of the West Ham mafia - we’ve got rid of the little Argie sh1t, next on the list is Rio, then Michael “I really am good” Carrick!

Sorry, 'bout that, bit of mid-season rantings :woohoo:

Ed - There is a saying in football that some people are never happy.

The individuals you mention have just won the Premiership back to back, and taken your team United to 2 consecutive European Cup Finals. Not sure what else they could have done!!! Us fans of lesser clubs (THFC) can only dream of these things.

Anyway back to the thread - too young to have watched him play but my old fella always raved about him. Was his nickname ‘Corky’?

I did go to the benefit game where City sent a full first team down and in a cracking match Witton drew with them at the Central Ground.

I also remember going to a benefit dinner for Dave in Manchester, where the speakers (Sir Bobby Charlton and Fred Eyre/Pye i think) gave their time free, and spoke about him in glowing terms.

Yes, his nickname was “Corky”. He was not only one of the best players ever pull on the red and white shirt but a lovely fella too. I once asked him why he stayed at Witton when he was obviously good enough for league football. His answer? He just said Witton was a lovely, friendly, family club and he didn’t want to play anywhere else. Eventually he did leave, but I think he had to be pushed hard to fulfill his true potential, otherwise he would have ended his career with Witton. Nearest to him in loyalty and being a nice bloke? Pritch, but as a player I don’t think I saw better, unless we go back to the 50’s team and I don’t remember them all that well, I was only a kid then.
WHS.

yes i agree surely albions all time great apleasure to watch him play for the albion
