Gateshead vs Witton

Perhaps we’ve both blown it and given it to Burscough

Finished 1-0 according to livescores.co.uk >:(

Full time Gateshead 1-0 Witton

Not a disaster, as most people said on Saturday we can afford to lose tonight, it was always going to be difficult after a nervy game 2 days ago and the long journey today.

A point at Whitby on Sat is good enough, then we will beat Telford and Frickley

come on lads put this one behind you look forward to saturday and then on to lift that trophy. come on you can do it.

Well it’s down to both of us to lose this title now. If we win all 3 games we’re champs guaranteed and vice versa

I am suffering from severe "Deja Vu". Remember how we dropped two points to Flixton and lost the league and promotion on goal difference, that result against Grantham may come home to haunt us. We HAVE to win against Telford and Frickley now, no ifs or buts and even then our goal difference with Burscough may let us down. A point at Whitby is now the minmum we need, anything less and I see us losing the title on goal difference again.
WHS.

Game on!
If (and it’s a big if) Telford get a result on saturday at North Ferriby. Whitton fail to beat Whitby. Then the couple of hundred or so Whitton hard core fans better grab their peice of terracing or grass banking (or whatever it is!!!) nice and early as there may be just one or two Bucks fans crossing the border next week.
it’s then down to the teams.

You can see a situation where any of the 3 teams could be crowned champions on the last day. Nerve wracking!

I think the main factors in our favour is that we finish with 2 home games, and of course that Telford are playing Burscough on the last day.

I think like a lot of others, I was half expecting this result tonight but it’s still in our own hands.

The big worry is the goals we are conceding just lately and that may make all the difference in the end.

Good that there’s some realism (note: not pessimism) in the discussion. All we have to do is get a point at Whitby, and beat Telford and Frickley… hmmm.

Last few matches…

Injury time winner at Hednesford (admittedly should have been a few goals up by that point, but we weren’t).
Bit of a farce against Grantham - we get a draw.
"Nervy" win against Mossley.
Lost against Gateshead.

My point is that we’re patently not playing well enough to be confident about any of the remaining games, home or away. Why did several people expect us (remember we’re top of the league, for goodness sake) to get nothing at Gateshead tonight?

For all I know, both Burscough and Telford might also not be playing very well. I hope so. What an ending to the season this is going to be. You couldn’t have made up a script like this.

Come on Witton - we still should be big favourites. Just get the job done.

Just got in!!! What a bloody day that was.

anyway - for those questioning performances we looked a lot more fluent in the 1st half and cold have had a couple.
2nd half less pressure but certainly not out played or out fought in my opinion.
Jim very disappointed not to have won the game.

Still ours for the taking.
Keep the faith.

anyway - we are top of the league say we are top of the league - youre not! (thats not a dig at Telford - but that was one of the longest chants for ages - the dug outs had even been wheeled away when we stopped!)

Witton should have got something from this game!

Truth is, it was a poor second half performance, the longer the game went on the better we made Gateshead look! They are not a particularly good side, however we gifted them with several opportunities to win it. We gave away soft free kicks in dangerous positions and our defending from set-pieces was nervy! JK made a good save from the corner before they scored, but really he should have caught or punched away the original corner and the goal would not have happened!

This game was a big ask, a 170 mile each way journey on a Monday night, within 48 hours of the previous match obviously played a part - however, if you want to be Champions then you have to step up to the challenge and fight for every ball. For me there were too many players that didn’t do enough on the night, I personally wanted to see more fight! If we don’t start this soon then the season will be remembered as "the year we played the best football in the league and won nothing"!

We have scored more goals than any team in this division and are at the top based on merit, the lads need to start believing in themselves. At times I wonder whether the fans have more belief in their ability than they do?

This is by no means over, we need to brush aside the disappointment of last night and move on. The difference now is that we no longer have the luxury of games to do it, it starts Saturday and we need a big performance from every player - too many did not do it on Monday. I would like to see Gaghan and Farquharson start at the weekend and really cause Whitby some trouble from the off, not when we have gone behind. We also need to play defenders in their positions (where they have played most of the season).

We can do this but there are no more dress rehearsals, believe we can do it and for 90 minutes give 100%, nothing less.

Well done to all those that went to Gateshead, the support for a Monday night was tremendous. For those that didn’t go to Gateshead then get to Whitby, we need to make the atmosphere electric. As has been posted they have a game on Thursday and we need to use this to advantage, hit them hard and early and put this game out of their reach within the first half hour. There are a few twists and turns left before this title is won, it can now go all the way to the last game!

Come on the albs!

Great effort lads and lasses that went up to Gateshead last night.

Now lets paint Whitby yellow!

"Say we are top of the league, say we are top of the league - you’re not!" Brilliant! 5 solid minutes at full time until every Witton player had left the pitch and every Gateshead fan had left the stand. And the again on the bus home!

Thanks to Jim and the lads for making us feel so welcome on the bus, and especially on the journey home.

Yes it is still in our hands, but as said previously it’s now up to the players to believe they can do it. On footballing merit we are the best team in this league, i just hope we can get the mental side right in time for saturday.
