WE ARE TOP OF THE LEAGUE !!!
A much better performance without some influencial players and a result to match.
Not a lot to say - GET IN!

well done to the boys not only did they take on hednesford they took on the ref and linesman too. Up the Albion
Brilliant result.
Well done to everyone. Only ours to lose now! Didn’t think I’d say it, but it’s looking more possible.
Fantastic for Jim. Must have been a tough week all in all.
Who needs Mourinho!!!
Comedy, the freekick that led to your goal was taken at least 10 yards further forward then the foul was commited and the ball was moving but you were playing AGAINST the ref and lino. O…K
Good luck for the rest of the season, rather see you than Telford up there.
Cheers Dobba. Thanks for coming on here. We’ve found, as I’m sure you have, things tend to go either for you or very much against you. Just have a trawl back through some of the threads regarding our ill luck!
What about your views on the game as a whole?
I’m just hoping we either move up the leagues or just get moved back down to the Southern League, the officials in this one are beyond a joke.
Its the best performance defensively I’ve seen from us this season, just edging Telford away. Just feel robbed that the ref cant keep his eyes on a dead ball situation, dire officials as per usual in this dross divison, after all the hard work the boys put in to keep you at bay.
God knows why our gaffer brought Mario off, even if the bloke can’t speak English he’s our best player by a mile but obviously he sees it differently.
You had your moments, but we did quite well (at times) to close you down before the play got going. Saying that from the drubbing you gave us at your place its pretty obvious that your the best team in this division.
Before starting this report I’d just like to thank Terry Brumpton for his kind words in this afternoon’s match programme. I remember in the past Kettering Town & Workington have mentioned me in their issues and it really does bring a lump to my throat.
HEDNESFORD TOWN 0 WITTON ALBION 1 att 613
Kennedy; Kearney, Pritchard, Barras, Spearritt; Brownhill (Frost 79), Clegg, Brown, Peers; Warlow, Moseley (Farquarson 73). n/u Hockenhull
Six points from their 3 away matches in 8 days hopefully will not see the word slump, as reported elsewhere, be used again!
Jim Vince, with the highly popular Nigel Deeley alongside him, wore a beaming smile after snatching all the points in the 2nd minute of stoppage time, Burscough had done exactly the same the day before so ok for the Albion then as they regained top spot.
Jim set the stall out differently for this must win for both sides enthralling encounter at the magnificently appointed New Cross Keys Stadium. With 4 towering defenders pitched against the Pitmen’s tall forwards the plan worked almost perfectly. Rob Lloyd was the latest player to be sidelined, joining Steve Connors and Griff Jones, following an injury to his back. However his replacement Ross Clegg, arguably had one of his best ever games for the Albion as he constantly harassed and chased.
It was from a Clegg pass that Albion’s first telling attack in the 12th minute saw Mike Moseley just unable to control the ball. With both teams wary of each other then it wasn’t until the 27th minute that Albion next produced a telling move that really should have broken the deadlock. Alex Brown burst through and released Mark Peers on the right, he took the ball towards the by-line before pulling the ball perfectly back to Adam Warlow, the striker could only find the right upright and when Brown latched onto the rebound keeper Ryan Young was back in position to save the low drive. Clegg then saw his own effort just clear the crossbar. Just before the break it was Moseley’s turn to squander a gilt opportunity when he completely mistimed his attempt with the goal at his mercy.
In the 53rd minute Peers escaped the pack of defenders to run on and smack the ball a whisker past the post. At the other end Jon Kennedy was dealing well with the aerial bombardment and had taken a couple of hefty illegal challenges in his stride. Suddenly though Daniel Bacon had slipped down the right to produce a great ball aimed for Jon Douglas in space at the far post, however Kennedy just got enough on the ball to deflect it away from the intended target.
With quarter of an hour left a great move involving Tom Spearritt, Peers and Liam Brownhill saw the latter’s cross beat Young only to be hacked away by Ross Adams, narrowly missing the advancing Albion cavalry. Warlow then produced a fine dipping shot that just went over the bar. Kennedy then produced an instinctive save getting down smartly to keep Bacon’s snap-shot out.
A measure, yet again following the Fleetwood match, spoke volumes for Albion when the Match Sponsors announced Town’s central defender Tom Marshall as Man of the Match but he looked anything but when Warlow left him sitting on his bum as once more the striker won the day and fittingly it was from yet another lay-off from him that MARK PEERS was able to get a run on goal, he neatly rounded Young before slotting the ball home as two defenders vainly attempted to recover the situation.
Cue some of the most joyous scenes, on and off the field, seen for many a long time.
I’m not sure my liver and kidneys can cope with promotion!!!
Massive massive result at Hednesford and another great day on the road. I thought we deserved all 3 points for the way we approached the game and frankly we were the only side playing football. Much in the same way as the home game, HT have only one way of playing - they are a strong physical side that try to muscle out results, but they cannot do much other than lump the ball forward at any opportunity. There is no variation to their style of play, every time they won a throw-in within 30 yards of our goal you knew what was coming next!
I thought Barras was immense with one of his best performances of the season. Kearney is starting to show what a good signing he can be. Cleggy did all the ugly stuff in midfield and worked solid for 90 minutes. Liam covered a huge area of the pitch on both sides of midfield (and was tackling back whenever needed). Front lads had a tough afternoon and really with the chances we might have been one or two up earlier, most importantly though they never gave it up. Farqy (easier to spell), was excellent when he came on - substitutes need introducing to change a game and create fresh problems for the opposition, he did exactly that!
As for the winner, it just maybe that Mark Peers made the difference between play-offs and the championship yesterday? Peersy has not looked at his early season best over the past few games, however the quality is still there. Ironically I will admit to thinking he looked tired during the last 10 minutes of the match and wondered if taking him off for Hockenhull (perhaps pushing Kearney further up) might help - but I was wrong (it does happen)! A moment of brilliance and all three points, Peersy’s reaction and celebration was one the seasons best moments!
We need to get behind the lads for the next two home games, these should be easy wins on paper however football is played on grass! The vocal support in the second half yesterday made a big contribution to the result - neither the team or supporters ever gave up.
Of course I knew we would win yesterday (Robbo and I called it before the off)!
See ya tomorrow
What a great result! Couldnt believe it when i heard it! But anyway, WE ARE TOP OF THE LEAGUE SAY WE ARE TOP OF THE LEAGUE! More of the same on monday please boys! Come on Witton!
Brilliant yesterday, spent a fortune, cant remember much about last night either!!
But what a day!
Quality ;D
I thought you made a profit on the day - last I heard you were £2 up!
Although, £10 loss to the pool playing rabbit + £12 Killer profits - £5 Beef Wrap - £10 for the one round you bought = £110 day out (not sure where the other cash went)!
It’s only money! (Well so Mrs Rabbit keeps saying)!
Jerry you made my day yesterday!!! "brilliant, i’m 2 pound up" You couldn’t make it up!!!
Yesterday was a watershed moment in our season. That goal yesterday made all the trips to places like Prescot and Ashton worthwhile. It’s moments like that that make people watch football. Fantastic.
However, if victories like that mean that i wake up in Greg’s bed at 11am the next day, i’m not sure i can take it.
We made up a new song last night whilst watching mighty Joe Calzaghe batter that bloke off big brother, sorry if any of you think it’s tempting fate but right now i don’t care…
To the tune of that awful Vieira song arsenal used to sing…
Mark Peers whooooa
Mark Peers whooooa
Beat the keeper to the ball, and Telford won f*ck all
;D
Dobba, you muct have been watching a different game to us, i’ve never seen a team of bruisers like you lot spend so much time being injured. The referee gave us absolutely nothing all game, every time Adam Warlow (our ridiculously good number 9) went near any of your back 4 you lot got a free kick!!! And i’m left scratching my head about what the hell you’re banging on about for our goal, sounds like a desperate excuse to me Did the linesmen stick to fingers up at your fans? Thought not.
The funniest thing for me yesterday (apart from Jerry) has to have been the award of MOTM to your number 5!!! Brilliant!!! I’ve seen some poor players in this league but the lad is a brainless hoof merchant, and the fact that he got put on his ars3 by Warlow seconds after the announcement gave us something to chuckle about.
Anyway, best of luck for the season, and i hope anyone gets promoted apart from Fleetwood. The hospitality from your fans and staff yesterday was spot on, thanks very much.
Oh one more thing…
Apparently I was on the verge of being ejected from the ground yesterday for being "overly aggressive" my crime? Standing behind the barrier, shouting abuse at the linesman. I most truly am a bad man. Do people in Hednesford not swear?! Sorry skip…
I think the linesman sticking his fingers up at us was overly provocative so i think that one evened itself out.
Yox/Jerry coming away £2 up was a bonus considering we managed to convince him every other round was his!! And considering he was the one offering to play people at pool for £10, you would of at least expected him to put up a fight!!
I had a funny feeling whilst i was driving down the M6 yesterday. Air con on, music on loud, and 3 lads sat in my car consuming copious amounts of lager. It felt like the journey to the Guisely game, so i always knew we’d win. There was just something in the air. Mark Peers is now a legend! The fact he came over to hug us all after scoring - despite the fact he could easily of received a booking for it - was brilliant. You could see it in the faces of every player yesterday just how big a win that was. Despite the ref not being the best i have seen this season, i do have to say he earned some respect from me for not booking Peers for his celebration. He went to his pocket at first, but then i think he had a change of heart, and even appeared to be smiling as he walked away!
For a complete day out i think Stamford is hard to beat, but for those last few minutes yesterday i don’t think i’ve ever felt better whilst watching football!! It was brilliant!! And it’s always good when Greg’s flat gets turned over at the end of the night!!!
Agree with Greenie that all of their fans who i spoke to after the game were very complimentary. Makes a nice change!!
See you all tomorrow - 1pm in Penny Black.
Seems a Telford fan (you know that club who cant stand us) seems to be of the same opinion. :
Just want to add my voice to those praising Barras and Cleg yesterday. I thought they were both superb. Again Kearney did everything asked of him, and looks a quality prospect. But i also want to highlight Tom Spearritt’s contribution to the team. Yesterday he filled in at left back, and was very solid. That’s now right-back, centre-mid, and left-back he has covered, aswell as centre-half which is obviously his chosen position. The fact that he has covered so many positions means he’ll never get 8, 9 or 10 out of 10 every week and therefore wont get that much recognition come player of the year awards time, but it doesn’t mean that he hasn’t been fantastic this season. It’s good to see the captain of our team really demonstrating a team ethic.
That’s what it’s all about!
The team was immense, everyone contributed.
I like that back 4.
Being a part of that crowd and especially that goal celebration was fantastic.
Clubs like Hednesford must wish for some of that from their own fans.
The difference in the drives back from Fleetwood and Hednesford is amazing.
The temporary New Zealand branch of the WAFC supporters club is gutted to be missing the action, but delighted with the result.
As we were coming off the ground we got some stick from Hednesford fans that the ref was biased towards us!! What game they were watching I don’t know.
That said did we really expect Hednesford to be any different from how they were at WP - a negative cynical team that over 2 games got just what they deserved - nothing!! Even if we don’t win anything that goal from Peersy was a blow for all teams who want to play a game how it should be played.
