Sorry for delay meant to post this on Monday -

UniBond Premier Division - Saturday September 23rd 2006

Lincoln United 1 Witton Albion 0 135

Team: Worsnop; Brownhill, Pritchard, Barras, Hockenhull; Gahgan (Moseley 63), Connors, Spearritt, Peers; Warlow, Sanasay (Frost 75). Leading scorer Mike Moseley, following his fellow strikers good form previously, was consigned to the bench after serving his three match suspension. Strangely though team captain Tom Spearritt was again given a mid-field role and looked fairly uncomfortable throughout whilst Alistair Brown, for the first time this season, sat the match out on the sub?s bench.

On a pitch not too conducive to Albion?s normally slick passing the team struggled throughout the whole match particular with far too many high balls that provided Lincoln?s, already mean defence, with easy clearance options. Mind you their dominant centre-back Stuart Reddington was more than fortunate to last past the first 20 minutes, having when as last man he fouled Mark Peers but was only shown a yellow card by referee David Naylor. The match official had also incensed the travelling party a few minutes earlier by awarding United a penalty-kick following Brian Pritchard?s apparently only obstructing a home player as the ball looked to be going harmlessly across the area. Naylor later told Pritchard that the obstruction rule had changed when in the penalty area!!

It was therefore Jon Hawley who stepped up to strike a good shot from the spot to Jon Worsnop?s left thus scoring the only goal of the game on 15 minutes. A quick look at their record this season now shows that 3 of just 6 goals they?ve scored have come the same way. However their defence has only conceded 7 times in the 9 league matches played. That fact the main reason Albion failed to score for the first time in this campaign.

Peers produced the first effort on goal in the 9th minute sending a 25 yard free-kick that keeper Mario Ziccardi gathered comfortably. It wasn?t though until a quick break just after the half-hour mark that their goal was threatened as Adam Warlow?s good control work saw him slip the ball across to Kevin Sanasay who could only find the side netting. Lincoln countered immediately and it took a good save from Worsnop to deny the very lively Gio Carchedi when he pushed the strong shot onto the crossbar.

On 38 minutes came Witton?s nearest effort and it was a brilliant piece of football from Peers who struck his shot across Ziccardi but with the keeper left for dead the ball fairly ricocheted off the far post with Chris Gahgan unable to produce enough control sending the follow up shot wide. In the dying moments of the half Darren Hockenhull following a good run squared the ball to Sanasay who blasted his effort over the crossbar.

The second period proved to be pretty uninspiring apart from a few minutes following Moseley?s 63rd minute introduction. He immediately was involved winning the ball to the right of the area before crossing to Sanasay who should at least have tested the keeper but shot over. Two minutes later Moseley himself had a chance when he got on a through ball from Connors, however Ziccardi produced a diving save to snuff out the only real threat of the half.

Aside from further claims for a penalty for the home side together with numerous questionable off-side decisions I?m afraid that was it!
