New Player

Garry (not Brendon) Burke has been signed from Curzon Ashton today, and is available to play tonight.

He is a defender who started this season at Stalybridge Celtic, and then moved to Curzon Ashton.

His previous clubs include Droylsden and Northwich Victoria.

Welcome to Witton Garry!! But i’m amzed Nige didn’t snap up Tim, Jamie, Neil, or Drew after Sunday’s performance!!

Garry played three games for us in 2005/06 season, one of them being the C.S.C Final win over Stalybridge!

Thanks Statto.

NIGEL Deeley has added another defender to his squad ahead of tonight’s trip to Buxton.

Former Chorley and Warrington Town stopper Neil Smith may start with two of his namesakes - keeper Greg and schemer Steve.

“We are short on numbers in defence,” said the Witton boss.

"Neil has been out of the semi professional game for a few months while he’s been setting up a new business but he’s ready to start playing again now.

“He works in fitness so has kept himself in decent shape.”

Albion are without four players tonight who have played at the heart of their defence this term.

Brian Pritchard (Achilles) and Tony Dunne (hamstring) are injured, while Liam Coyne starts a three-match suspension.

Gary Scott is also banned.

Dan Schwarz can cover in the centre but he is likely to fill in at full back to make way for Smith in the centre alongside another recent new arrival, Garry Burke.

MORE of the same please – that’s the message from Nigel Deeley to Lee Thompson after his goalscoring debut.

The former Prescot front runner may have earned a starting shirt for tomorrow’s trip to Buxton after coming off the bench to break the deadlock at the weekend.

“He’s a great acquisition for us,” Deeley told the Guardian.

“I’m looking for him to play a few games now and make a place his own.”

Thompson brought pep, plus presence, to Witton’s faltering front line on Saturday, rising highest to head home Mark Drew’s set piece eight minutes from time.

His may not have been a knockout blow following Matt Daly’s late, late leveller but he did enough to impress Deeley.

“The ball will stick to him up front,” he said.

“That’s an area we need to improve on because it give us a chance to keep possession better in our opponent’s half.

“He’ll also win a lot more in the air than Steve [Settle] or Kieran [Lugsden] which is not their strength.”

Deeley stopped short of backing Thompson to shoot up the scoring charts, stressing he expected goals to come from all areas.

He believes the former Skelmersdale United striker has the attributes to upset the Bucks at Silverlands.

“It’s a volatile place to go,” he added.

“That means it’s crucial we get a good start there and be solid from the outset.

“We’ll need to battle physically, which Lee can do.”

Deeley is likely to shuffle his shot-shy attack after watching them craft few clear cut chances on Saturday.

Settle is yet to score while Lugsden, for all his toil outside the area, rarely looks like getting into a shooting space.

With Rod Thornley away with the England national team, Thompson could be partnered by Dorryl Proffitt.

Brian Pritchard (Achilles) and Tony Dunne (hamstring) are out injured, while banned duo Liam Coyne and Gary Scott leave Albion short on numbers in defence.
