Deeley: It’s the fans that did it

NIGEL Deeley is desperate to do well for the club he loves.

The new Witton boss told the Guardian he is ready for the challenge of taking the team to the top of the pile.

“I’m buzzing at the prospect,” he said.

"Already I can’t wait to get out there on the training pitch with the players.

“It’s a big job, but I’m up for it.”

He has to be, with star striker Adam Warlow flitting to Fleetwood Town and rumours that others may follow him out of the Wincham Park exit, Deeley’s job maybe a revamp rather than a retouch.

Below he gives his verdict on the how, why and what behind his choice to succeed Jim Vince as manager:

On changing his mind: "I work as a coach for Manchester Metropolitan University and spoke to my manager about the possibility of taking the Witton job. He was totally supportive of my ambition, so long as my workload there did not change. I know I can juggle both so once I had his blessing I called Mark Harris to tell him I wanted to take over.

On stepping up to be a number one: “This is a great club. There are good people here and in truth the supporters were the ones that changed it for me. I think they made it an easy decision to take the job and now I want to repay their faith in me. I won’t let them down and any success or failure that happens from now won’t be for the want of hard work.”

On his immediate priorities: “Obviously the team is my number one. Mark Harris has already said we want to try and keep as many of last year’s team as possible. Of course some will leave - that would have happened even if Jim was still here - so I will need to bring some new faces in. I’ve spoken to two or three already this week so we’ll see what happens.”

On replacing key players: “It’s going to be very difficult. I know who I want to keep but because of the budget restraints some will be offered reduced terms. They will have to go if they are motivated by money and feel they can earn more elsewhere. As I said before there were going to be changes anyway in both directions.”

On his managerial style: “As an assistant last year I had to be a calming influence at times. There were one or two occasions when one or two people got carried away in the dressing room and I stepped in to soothe those situations. That said, I do have a side to me that will dish out a rollicking if I need to.”

On maintaining ‘Brand Witton’: "We had a reputation for playing attractive, attacking football and that’s one thing that won’t be changing. It’s a philosophy I believe in and if anything I want that to be even better now I’m the manager.

On where improvements are needed: "We need to be better up front, more clinical in front of goal. That’s going to be a big job now Adam is not there but one I felt we needed to look at anyway. As has been well documented we do need more steel in the team. At times last year we needed a bit more determination and maybe a more ugly streak, particularly when the pitches are poor around the turn of the year.

On being a Wittoner: “If anything that makes it easier for me. I’ve played here, badly, and I know the working of the club inside out. I know that whenever I do leave, either to help out Real Madrid or because I’ve been sacked, I will continue to support Witton Albion. The emotional attachment can never be severed.”

Don’t know about everyone else but I for one am pleased with his plans, and after a depressing 2 months it makes me feel a bit better.

As you would expect from Nige, tremendous honesty and accuracy in his statements. Whenever I have spoken to Nige regarding football matters he has impressed me hugely with the way he reads the game, can analyse the weak points and focus on areas where improvement has been required. The fans need to make sure the weight of expectation for next season is not a burden and we should support him through the process of building HIS team. Of all the managers we could have recruited for this football club we have absolutely made the right choice.
