OSSETT TOWN 4 WITTON ALBION 2 Att. 190
Team: Smith G.; Scott (Schwarz 55), Pritchard, Brockley, Donnelly; Thaker (Skelton 63), Olsen, Drew (Willis 77), Smyth; Thompson & Thornley R.
For their first match back at Witton Albion, Manager Gary Finley and his Assistant Lee Coathup paraded both their two new players - Jamie Olsen (ex Burscough) and Mark Smyth (ex Leigh Genesis) and both certainly played their part as Albion surged into a two goal lead just after the half-hour mark.
In the 5th minute a Smyth corner kick was headed over the bar by Mark Drew. Encouraged by getting on for 50% of the crowd Witton took the lead in the 19th minute. Lee Thompson was fouled close to the left touchline, Olsen produced the perfect free-kick for LEE THOMPSON to head powerfully home from a central position. The clouds that had descended over the past few weeks seemed to have been eradicated as passes found team-mates and the forward play stretched the opposing defenders and it was no surprise when the lead was doubled.
Far too often in previous matches throw-ins had been wasted but in the 32nd minute Gary Scott threw the ball to Ross Thaker, he in turn took the attention of two markers before laying the ball back to Scott who struck a majestic ball into the danger zone for MARK SMYTH to quickly seize the opportunity to strike the ball past a flatfooted John Lamb.
The affect on the Town team at the basement of the league was clearly visible and it just seemed like a matter of time before Witton went further ahead, Rod Thornley getting closest. Then two minutes before the interval keeper Lamb launched a long kick downfield, Aiden Savory outstripped Steve Brockley, drew Greg Smith before going to his right and slotting the ball home.
Four minutes into the second half the scores were levelled in somewhat bizarre circumstances, Thaker was fully exposed as last man near to the right touch-line, he chose to play the ball back to Smith but under-hit the back pass, the keeper came out of the area but in trying to rescue the situation only succeeded in kicking the ball a few yards straight to Rob OāBrien who took full advantage to lob the ball into the unguarded net. Ironically minutes later Scott left the action with a groin injury that heād been feeling prior to Thakerās misdemeanour!
A fully rejuvenated Town took over and Smith was called upon to produce several saves to keep the marauders at bay. On the hour mark though his team were back in familiar territory, chasing the match. Andy Lee, whom Finley had signed for Albion previous, struck a shot from point blank range that Smith somehow parried only for Lee to quickly follow up to net.
With ten minutes remaining substitute Dan Skelton produced the only noteworthy attempt of the half for the visitors when his headed effort was caught by Lamb. Three minutes later though any chance of taking anything from the match disappeared when Andy Leeās low drive from the left bounced awkwardly just in front of Smith to evade the keeper.
Ten straight league defeats now sees Witton anchored at the bottom of the league, for the first time in eleven seasons, with next Saturdayās home match result, against fellow strugglers Worksop Town, being absolutely crucial as they attempt to kick-start their campaign.
