gutted! come on lads lets see wat uve gfot these ;last few minutes and lets get a point at least! come on witton!
Always seems to happen when you miss penalties
Let us hope against hope that Gateshead lose too, but my “gut” reaction is atht they won’t. Is 0-1 the final score?
WHS.
Finished 1 - 0. Never expected to take more than a point, if Prescot turned 11 shop dummies out against us in a league game at Valerie Park we’d struggle! Trouble is, we have the same sort of record against Leek at Wincham Park. We have to lay that bogey next week.
Gateshead 1.1 Eastwood Town
FINAL SCORE, Gateshead were 1 down.
Witton lost 1.0
Fleetwood won 3.1
To be honest today we did not play that bad in fact we did ok and the draw would have been a fair result on the worst pitch in the league ive seen so far. If Barras had scored the penalty it would have changed the game but we had other chances that were not taken and that is were we lost the game. once prescot scored we were kicked out of the game and we had a lot of decisions go against us.There keeper also made two good saves one from peersy and another from Evans. We have to move on and get behind the team on saturday, bring on leek.
Here we go while it is fresh in my mind!
We were a rabble today - dragged down to Prescots level on a pitch fit for cabbages and spuds rather than the football we want to play. No cohesion in the selected team,Macca playing wide instead of Peers never looked like working. Missed 4 good chances inc the pen to Prescots 1 ( brilliant save from JK ) in the 1st half. In the the 2nd half we had 2 good chances ( Peers and Evans ) to Prescots 1 which they took well. Coo has got to be back in at full back and Kearney at centre back IMO.
Rant over so we move on and get 3pts against Leek. Feel better after hearing the Gateshead result ( they will be gutted just like us )
MoM - Alex Brown - he never stopped working to create something.
Agree with you Eli…should have been at least 2 up at half time, never looked like we would lose it. Didn’t play too well second half and Prescot battled hard. They didn’t deserve to win it though. MoM…Alex Brown again ! I too feel a little better knowing Gateshead only drew, it’s still in our hands. Bring on the next match. Last comment…the patch (sorry, pitch) was an utter disgrace.
I’d love to say we lost to a better team, but can’t say that. It was the usual story in my book - dreadful pitch and a side that has a knack of being able to get results against us. They are an awful team but they make the most of what they have, they nicked a goal and ended up getting all 3 points.
We could and should have scored at least a couple in the first half and their keeps made a fantastic save from Peersy just before they scored.
We got ourselves in a bit of spin - couldn’t get 2 passes together and in the end the game drifted away from us helped by a poor referee.
Moral of the story is that we must do better, the league is not won, underestimate other teams at our peril and lets knuckle down for the last 10 games - and please lets not go to Prescot next season!!!
Why can’t we play against ugly teams ?, Why ?
the game was not a very good advert for Unibond football (understatement) or for football in general, we all knew what the playing surface was going to be like and it certainly didnt let me down in my expectations, I am sure the lads and lasses that work hard to keep Prescot going do all they can, but surely there must be some kind of standard that is set by the Unibond.
However put that aside, there were some poor performers out there today, Barrass,Brownhill,Warlow were the pick of that bunch,(notice in alphabetical
order).
Thought the lazy beggar worked his socks off, then stupidly got himself booked for dissent. A most irritating afternoon all round, but why am I suprised, just knew it would be. Only three league defeats so far, About time I didnt feel like anything to eat on a Saturday again
Knutsfordian - spot on summary!
ME - I thought you were no longer posting on this nasty looking forum (anyway just popping out for a another 40 snouts after today).
Today’s game reminded me very much of Leek away, a shocking pitch and poor opponents, the ony aspect of our game that is missing in my opinion is the ability to win ‘ugly’ and it does not get much uglier than today! That said it is not uncommon, you have to build a team to win the majority of games and not the minority! That said we knew what was coming today!
There is certainly no need for the panic button, that was the first league defeat I have seen since August (I was on holiday for the Eastwood game) - I would have taken that at the start of the season. So Fleetwwod beat Osset (wow), Gateshead drew at home (points lost). We are still in the driving seat!
PRESCOT CABLES 1 WITTON ALBION 0
Unibond Premier League – Saturday March 1st
Team; Kennedy, Kearney, Barras (C), Pritchard, Brownhill, Lloyd (Peers), Brown, MacPherson, Brodie (Coo), Warlow (Evans), Thornley.
WITTON struggled on a pitch that nullified their passing style of football, although the Valerie Park surface was only partly to blame for the scoreline! Albion were left to rue a first half penalty miss and a late defensive lapse which cost a share of the points.
For all of visitors’ early pressure Prescot’s Liam Kennedy went closest to opening the scoring, namesake John Kennedy’s one-handed diving save turning his left foot volley around the post.
On the half hour Rod Thornley was wrestled to the floor and despite Prescot protests referee McGill pointed directly to the spot. With first choice penalty taker Mark Peers mysteriously on the bench Tony Barras took responsibility, however his poorly taken attempt proved an easy save for Zak Hibbert.
Peers’ introduction midway through the second period looked like it may break the deadlock, the Witton winger drove a fierce left foot shot towards the top corner that was turned over the bar by Hibbert. From the ensuing corner Steve Brodie drove against the upright from close range.
Minutes later Witton paid the price for failing to convert their earlier opportunities. Ryan Wade toe-poked what turned out to be the winner, having worked himself into a gap between Albion’s two central defenders.
Forced to avoid the Valerie Park deck, an uncharacteristic high ball over the defence came close to producing an immediate equaliser. A defensive header over the advancing Hibbert put substitute Tony Evans through on goal but the Albion striker could only find the side netting from a tight angle.
I think we all have to accept that days like today happen. There will be a hundred and one reasons from bad pitch to bad penalty, from bad ref to bad form from some players. But ultimately the players didn’t go out with the idea of letting Precot rip up the form book.
You could sense the frustration and bewilderment at our players inability to make things happen in their normal way and I suppose that’s why we picked up the late bookings.
No excuses but it happens.
Lets move on and be ready for Leek.
Having watched a wretched game on a wretched pitch I then went to watch Manchester City and Wigan who both did well to get nil.
48 years ago today I broke my leg - do I not like March 1st’s
Thought the only player worth his salt today was Alex Brown.
GE
Gateshead must be “gutted” they only gained one point on us. A win next Saturday is now extremely important, we need to go to Gateshead with at least a 6 point advantage. I still think they are the threat, not Fleetwood, (though they might sneak up on us if we are not on the ball). Hope to be there next week. If not, Chad will get another envelope.
WHS.
Not gonna have a go at our super team but why oh why did Jim go to 4-3-3?! Nil nil at the time and I thought it was obvious that we needed width, but we went narrow and surrendered possesion and field position. Oh well, still in pole position but I think we’ve cocked up today. Let’s hope it doesn’t cost us
Why is Barras taking a pen, a joke considering the number of very talented attacking players we have in the team.
Well played Alex Brown
One other thing, that pitch was a disgrace, a complete and utter disgrace. Not fit for Sunday League never mind this level. Apparently they don’t have a roller!
There were 2 things completely in our hands yesterday.
1.the team selection
2.the choice of penalty taker
Why didn’t a “goalscorer” take it? TB would have been my 11th choice.
Yesterday is now just painful history but don’t make any more bad decisions like that one. It’ll cost us.
Bring on Leek and Up The Albion!
I understand the theory behind a “goalscorer” taking the penalty and having not seen the penalty myself I’m probably not best placed to pass judgement. However I would say you have your best penalty taker taking the penalty regardless of their position on the field or goalscoring record.
For many years Denis Irwin banged them in at United, David Unsworth scored a pretty important penalty on the last day of the premier league season last year and in 1990-91 Bruce scored something like 11 penalties for United in one season!!
As I said I haven’t seen the pen nor have I been present in training when (I assume) the best man for the job was decided. The best penalty taker in the world will always miss one. Just need to pick ourselves up and move on.
You can tell I am lousy under pressure; I now see Buxton as a threat too!!!
WHS.
For once I think everybody was of the same opinion about yesterdays game - it must have been bad for GE to comment:( . Lets hope we don’t get another one like it or there will be some bums squeaking at WP.
