UniBond Cheshire F.A. Senior Cup Quarter-Finals ? Tuesday November 7th 2006

STALYBRIDGE CELTIC 1 WITTON ALBION 2

TEAM: Kennedy: Spearritt, Pritchard, Barras, Brownhill; Hendricks (Peers 78), Brown Alex, Connors, Gahgan (Brown Alistair 86) ; Moseley, Jones G. Subs n/u Foy & Hockenhull

Team Rating FOUR Man of Match Chris Gahgan n/b Alex Brown

Albion produced a sensational 20 minute spell of football after the interval to once again defeat their Conference North opponents and earn a home semi-final place. However confusion reigns as to whom we now host. The original published draw stated Cammell Laird, who beat Warrington 2-0 also last night, but the County FA?s website now has us playing either Vics or Stockport who play their tie next Tuesday. No doubt this issue will be resolved very soon!!

Griff Jones spurned a good opportunity on 14 minutes following a lovely move that saw Chris Gahgan beat his marker before crossing to the unmarked Jones but the striker skyed his shot. Celtic?s Lee Morris a minute later found himself clear but when he lobbed Jon Kennedy the ball went well wide of the goal.
Halfway through the opening period Alex Brown saw his 25 yard effort clear the bar but in the next minute he went through two defenders, played the ball to Gahgan whose shot was deflected away for a corner. Kennedy then produced a good diving save to push away Kevin Parr?s strongly driven shot. On 39 minutes a Gahgan free-kick from wide on the left found Brian Pritchard at the far post but his header was hacked off the line by Barrie Keeling. Pritchard then had what appeared to be a legitimate goal, when he fairly lashed the ball past Nick Buxton, chalked off for offside when a defender was playing him on.

The opening attack of the second period saw Jones curl his effort narrowly wide of the target before Kennedy again denied a one on one, this time thwarting Mark Hume. Celtic then made a double substitution and whilst they were still re-arranging their formation Albion struck them where it hurts. Hendricks crossed the ball from the right, Alex Brown initially appeared to have missed a shooting chance but then laid the ball to his right and coming in fast was CHRIS GAHGAN who let fly from the angle, 15 yards out to opening the scoring in the 56th minute.
Hendricks on the hour mark then saw his shot saved by the diving Buxton but three minutes later the winger, who was really enjoying his full debut, won the ball, crossed high from the by-line, a Celtic defender managed to get a head on the ball but it ended at Jones?s feet. He picked out CHRIS GAHGAN, centre goal and the ball was struck firmly taking a slight deflection on its way past Buxton.

On 73 minutes came an awful collision of heads involving Hendricks and Grant Black, the game was held up for four minutes but neither player was able to continue. Celtic threw on their final substitute, Michael Fish, and he took full advantage of the hold-up by starting and finishing a fine move with his header. Former Albion player Anton Lally, who left the club in disgrace last season, was very fortunate indeed not to have received a second yellow when he scythed through from the back, it appeared Witton players pleaded for leniency. Despite the home side showing some urgency, at last, Witton stood their ground and received and deserved the accolades from their 50 strong following.
If you fancy a peep - I’ve updated my blog with my take on last night’s game. ?Well impressed - you looked a damn sight more like a football team than you did when you turned over Mossley - although you weren’t that bad that day either ?;)

Good luck against Cammel Laird - they like to play it the same way you do - he said having watched them beat Mossley last Saturday ?:-[

Just in case it doesn’t come up at the bottom:

http://sixtamesides.blogspot.com
