As for names, “Wasps” are now called “London Wasps”, “Warrington” are now “Warrington Wolves” and the list goes on. “Wimbledon” even became “MK Dons”. I understand our past is very important, but our future is FAR more important. Adding “Northwich” to our name will not change us from “Witton Albion”, we will still be the “Albs” or “Witton” to all us old supporters but if using “Northwich” in our name makes it easier for us to raise money via sponsorship I think it should be given due consideration, maybe even put to the vote at an AGM.

Wasps are still called London Wasps despite not playing in London. I know another team who are due not to play in their town so maybe they should now be called Flixton Victoria or Stafford Victoria!
The Warrington issue is a non starter as Wolves is a branding added in 1996 to give the club a marketable title at the formation of the Super League. Most other clubs were doing this as a USP much like American Sports teams do. If you want to use this as an argument then we need to be called Witton Wolves or Witton Wizards or similar.
As for the Wimbledon issue - the move to MK made them a franchise team and whilst they held the football share of Wimbledon (rights to play in the league) the FA suggested the name change so as not to cause confusion over the actual location of the club. Since Witton still play in Northwich and not 65 miles away as MK Dons were going to do, I don’t see this as an issue.
If I hear a team name and I’m not sure where they play (say for example Woodley Sports) I go on google and type it in. There are plenty of teams round here that have names that don’t state where they belong (ie Daten Sports isn’t Daten Sports of Culcheth).
For me you are all missing the point, tacking on “of Northwich” does NOT change who we are but it would give us a higher profile locally and nationally. We are not a nationally known club such as Arsenal or Chelsea etc. Newton Heath, who were they? Manchester United, St. Marks or Ardwick FC who were they? Manchester City, both clubs changed their names for financial reasons as did other clubs of the period and let us get this straight, this is not a name change, just a “tack on”. Birmingham City were called Small Heath and in fact only added the “City” part to their name Birmingham in 1943. There are precedents for what has been suggested. I would be interested what the outcome of a vote on the matter at an AGM would be but as I have given my shares back to the club I cannot put the issue forward myself.

By the way, when Liverpool defected from Everton FC they were originally named Everton Athletic!! The FA made them change their name to Liverpool!!

No Robbo, not as far as I know but I am damn sure if a sheik offered enough money Man U. would be Abu Dhabi United in a minute!! And anyway what is wrong in being the first?

There is already a team with Northwich in their name, so we would be the second.
In fact why stop there. Should we not attach the name of the club a player is currently at on the end of their name to avoid confusion and give them greater exposure

Titchiner of Fleetwood for example
Jan Venegoor tried that and he’s never lived it down.
Dear oh dear I can’t believe this rubbish has surfaced again. I am seriously worried about the mental health of some people. The subsequent arguements and examples supporting the idea are piss poor and only the likes of themon their forum would be proud. That’s me added to the list!
Firstly there are two current teams in the town with the towns name why would us adding to it help?
Secondly adding the name that has been hugely discredited by the efforts of the past few years would be detrimental to our good Witton name. Businesses as soon as you mention the towns name and football give any money or sponsorship a wide berth,no idea why.
Thirdly if people do not know who or where we are then simply tell them and advertise it.
We are Witton Albion and that is something to be proud off now and in the future. There is no positive to changing our name and if this turns up on the next agm I will be bitterly disappointed as only two people want this and is it a coincidence you are related? The title of this thread should be changed to shouldn’t
“A Rose by any other name would smell as sweet”. Ideas are what keeps businesses going, this one may not be liked by everyone but it should not stop us considering things that at one time might have been considered unthinkable. I cannot believe the old board would have allowed the old Central Ground to be called “The Bargain Booze Stadium” for one thing but our present stadium was. In fact our present stadium has had at least three names that I know of. If a big company wanted to call it by their name would we say “No” and turn down big money? WE have to move with the times and I am for anything that raises our profile locally. That is me finished on the issue. Oh and by the way, it was NOT me or Chris who brought this idea up originally but a VERY important Witton man so we are not the ONLY people who thought it was a reasonable idea.
WHS.
Oh but he is a VERY important man, I will say no more. It was an idea, it may not be taken up but let us not be afraid of new ideas if they take the club forward.

Why are we even arguing about the name change eh? We belong to parish of Witton.Perhaps people should look into history and read how Witton Albion were formed. That would put a stop to this nonsense about name change
Just a thought.
vi8 of Witton.
UTA
Witton cum Twambrooks, abolished in 29th September 1894 and incorporated into Northwich. The parish of Witton still exists of course and St. Helen’s Church is in the Parish of Witton but is known more often as Northwich Parish Church. Here endeth the history lesson.
