Witton Albion v Sheffield FC

not that I spotted - mind you there weren’t any/many sheffield fans either

Thomas - there were about 6 or 7 Lincoln fans.

Just like watching Brazil today.

Everyone is playing with confidence now. Roy Cropper especially.

Good to see the big man back in defence and he must remain there too - and he probably scored the goal of the season.

Matlock watch out !

Forgot to mention the pitch - considering the bad weather we have had it looked great due to the groundstaff and helpers who worked on it this morning. The Sheffield fans were full of praise for the pitch and the stadium.

Good performance again from all the lads, I think we are playing better as a team with each game now, to think we had a million pounds worth of talent  on the bench today. I was pleased to see Paul Henry get the man of the match award, he does lots of work that goes unnoticed. Brad made me laugh for Helers goal… “Peter Peter, pass it pass it Peter Pass it I’m free, pass it, Pass it Pete!!! Pete!! Pete you greedy b… oh great goal”

A word for the groundstaff… excellent work well done

My scout at the game today reliably informs me that the season is fast turning into the Peter Heler show.By all accounts Paul Henry and Ryan Broadhead had very solid games too.

I must admit i do like the look of Ryan and Paul.I think they have a little bit of everything, which in the case of midfielders makes them look very commanding.

Once again the manager has us primed and in great shape for the tricky match at Matlock.

I am very sad I missed the game (though I did really enjoy listening to Lesley Garrett at the Bridgewater Hall, pity I could not do both). Is there a bus going to Matlock? If it leaves after 3-30pm I could make it, just. I have ALWAYS believed we would win this league and I have always had faith in the Manager and Board at the Club, I am delighted that faith has not been misplaced. ONWARDS AND UPWARDS!!!

Lesley who ?

Absolutely superb performance from the entire team; everyone knew their job and did it well. Agree that the midfield in particular were dominant and that was the secret of the win. It has taken a few weeks to see what we are capable of and I like the look of this team.

For now I’d rather be in fifth and showing good form; leading from the front for most of a season doesn’t seem to do us much good…

Shame on you Eli, she used to play “Dirty Den” in Eastenders!!!

Totally disagree. If the team isn’t playing well - which it wasn’t - then people are entitled to express their opinion on here. We are now playing very well, and both Gary and the players deserve praise for that. But it has taken a change in the system we play inorder for us to hit this recent rich vein of form, which shows that Gary has accepted we werent performing and therefore changed the team accordingly. Also Peter Heler wasn’t performing, and now he is. He is like a different player, and we are reaping the benefit.

The team were brilliant yesterday from front to back. Pritch has been immense since he came back into the side, and should definately keep his place on current performances. And what a goal too!

Henry and Broadhead battle superbly in the middle, and it allows Tandy, Heler, and Brad to play with a bit more freedom. Very rash tackle from Neville, and something i am sure Gary will look to work out of his game. Could easily have been 4 or 5, regardless of whether they had 11 men on the pitch or not. Our football at the moment in a joy to watch - at times it reminds me of the last time we had a title-chasing team…

Gary Finley has always signed good players. Their ability was never in question, but they are finally showing their potential and it should make the rest of the season very interesting.

Excellent post Robbo.

I wouldn’t change the contents of my posts on the subject at all and they are always considered before hitting the keyboard. I’ll heap praise on the team when it’s deserved and will do that far more than criticise them.

I stand by the comments that Tandy should not have been playing left back, that Pritch should not be left out of the side in preference for Rudd (who I feel is a striker playing at centre half) and that John McAliskey was lethargic and not interested. I think stripping Booth of the captaincy and giving it to Rudd created a selection problem and that we were lacking in midfield. I think Ruffer is a very good player but at the time we bought him in I don’t think was our greatest area of need.

The fact we have played well in recent games has coincided with Pritch being back in the back four, Tandy playing in his preferred left side position and the introduction of Ryan Broadhead (who despite not being necessarily as good as Dave MacPherson is playing exactly the role we were missing in the centre). The main difference is that players have been playing in their correct positions and there is at last some consistency. The manager has been very smart in bringing Maylett into the middle, technically Brad is one of the best footballers in the side and he has had more influence in the middle.

I am very pleased to be wrong about Peter Heler, he has been superb over the past month and it is clear that he was not fully fit (his injuries and recovering from Swine Flu were understandable hinderances). He was also lacking confidence and needed the run he has had.

If you can argue with any of the above then debate it, this is a forum!

It’s extremely encouraging to see the improvement and the group of players we have are now fulfilling their potential. The manager has massive influence over team selection, shape, belief and morale, if we play badly in one game he won’t be criticised but if we play poorly for a few weeks (which we had) then he is going to be scrutinised, that’s football. We are in a league where Kidsgrove are top and yet we have potentially by far the best squad in the league, so the demands to perform are high!

Will be interesting to see if Ruddy is available at Matlock whether he comes back into the team and who is left out ?

Excellent performance all round yesterday, well done to Gary and the squad - 3-0 well and truly exorcised the performance at Sheffield earlier in the season, I said then that they were no great shakes and stick by that.

At our best no team in this league can live with us. And what a league - the league leaders, unbeaten in 8 game bring less than 20 supporters away with them - proof if ever it were needed that we HAVE TO get out of this league as quickly as possible.

Twas a good day for football in Wincham yesterday!

Pritch’s goal was reminiscent of Tueart’s for City in their last trophy win - a mere 33 years ago! When Pritch was a mere 18 year old

Lets get behind the lads on Tuesday at Matlock.

According to what Pritch told me a few years ago he signed for Witton at the age of 12 and is now in his early twenties. We know that cannot be right as he has been at Witton for at least thirty years, maybe more, in fact I’m not sure if he made is debut alongside Alf Ashley and Joe Dale!!

Echo all thats been said very good performance, team looks absolutely together with the balance of attack and resolute defending, I think the secret has been gary trying the 4 3 3 when attacking and 4 5 1 when defending and you need the right players to do it well, imo lamby has made it possible with his extra pace, ability to hold the ball up and being decent in the air, having said that its nothing without the added threat of maylett and heler who have been excellent and the hard work put in by the midfielders. For me the only thing to look at is left back, neville does some awful tackles and his distribution and crossing is poor at best ?

One very happy Witton fan a great day in Wincham for football !!!

Careful CJ, that comment on Neville is bordering on criticism!!!

:silly:
