Witton Albion 1 North Ferriby United 0
Will Jones 21
This defeat was rather hard to take as Ferriby gave as good as they got for much of the game. It was certainly a very spirited performance and much more positive than has been the case too often this season.
Ferriby played three up-front and James Piercy, James Nichols and Niah Payne caused problems for the Northwich defence. Thy harried defenders and often forced them in to hasty clearances.
They were well-served by Ferriby’s midfields where Martindale, Jack Smith and ben Leyland worked hard.
A solid defensive performance from keeper Lewis Exall, Arron Brettell, Dan Nichols, Jack Mail and Callum Harrison made Witton’s attack work hard. Danny McKenna, Rob Hopley and Will Jones caused the most problems for Ferriby. Osebi Abadaki, who came on for the injured Will Booth also had a good game for Albion.
The goal that settled came after 21 minutes and was something of a sucker punch as Will Jones latched on to a long ball and fired past Lewis Exall.
Before the goal, both sides had half-chances. The only serious save either keeper had to make in the first-half was a flying effort from Exall to deny Booth.
Witton had the better of the second-half but could not find a clinching goal. Booth hit the bar and Tom Owens saw a shot cleared off the line by Brettell. Witton had a number of half-chances and another effort was cleared off the Ferriby line just before the end.
Ferriby had to play the final 20 minutes with 10 players after Jake Martindale was dismissed for two cautions. Both cards seemed harsh as the fouls were innocuous and worthy of nothing more than a free-kick. Unfortunately, that has been part of Ferriby’s problems this season. Martindale’s dismissal was the ninth of a Ferriby player this season.
The dismissal saw Witton impose themselves for the rest of the game and it’s a credit to The Villagers’ attitude that they defended well enough to not concede a second goal.
Manager Joe Lamplough commented after the game,
“One of the big positives from today was the fact that we strung passes together and created pressure on Witton’s defence.
“We also created chances to score even though we did not manage to capitalise on them.
“I thought we matched Northwich for much of the game. The only time they really looked comfortable was after Jake’s red card.
“it’s really disappointing to come with nothing but the performance shows promise for the final games of the season.”

I’ve had a lot of respect, over the years, for North Ferriby United, but come on you really do know how to upset us Wittoners, and not just once in that match report!!! Grrrrrrrrrrrr!!!
Loathing and Abuse in equal measures should be heaped upon their social media. OK for the reporter, perhaps he meant “Northwich-located-team”, but the manager? Not on really.
