ACROSS THE BORDER

Whilst in work last night in cosmopolitan Widnes i was thinking of past encounters against North Wales teams. My records from mid-eighties shows a mixed bag of results.86/87 was the worst season loosing on our travels to Rhyl,Bangor and Caernarfon. Our home record was better thankfully. We also lost to Colwyn in a cup tie ,with big Leo Skeete having an off day.We also got hammered at Bangor with Carl Dale running Mick Kilduff ragged.
Mercifully all the above counts for nothing when saturday comes.
An interesting fact to lighten the load-Did you know that Widnes is twinned with Palma,Majorca.

Seem to remember us winning a Trophy game away to Portmadoc in the dim and distant. A certain Jimmy O’Brien starring (?) for us. I’m sure it was in black and white - Early 1970s?

I remember that! I travelled there on a Vespa 90, and it was bloody freezing! I think it must have been during the winter of the 70-71 season. If memory serves me correctly, we won 1-0, can’t remember who scored, maybe Dave Carrick? And I remember OB playing for us - ex-cheerleader makes good!!

Considering Jimmy was born on the same hospital ward as me, with the same registrar, but 4 months earlier, it must be longer than that!

Match Details:- 5-Dec-1970 Portmadoc (FAT 3q.) 1-0 527 Dicken Doughty Davey O’Brien Rogers Goryl Dean Haspell Ogden CARRICK Farron. Substitute Gilly Prescott replaced O’Brien on 74 minutes. Gate Receipts £66 - cheap to get in them days!

Ahhh! yes (3 t’s in Witton) Johnny O’Brien aka Jimmy

Chad, you are indeed the font of all knowledge!

Must correct you though(!) I don’t think OB was ever referred to as Johnny!

Answers on a post card as the why John O’Brien was nicknamed Jimmy! Which has stuck with him to this day by the way. Conneelys and O’Briens are not allowed to enter

Or call in at The Greenbank and ask him !

Ah yes, but would he tell you?

Will let you know Eddie !

went to school with ob. he was known as johnny there.

Yep and he was Johnny to me back in the mid 1960’s Central Ground Choir (Lizards Goal Post days)and it was always John that his mum referred to him by.
