It is with sadness that I have been informed today of the sad news that former player and player/manager Alan Haspell passed away last Friday at the age of 75.
There will be piece in Saturday’s Matchday Programme commemorating Alan’s football career, particularly during his time as a Witton Albion player and manager.
Alan’s photo adorns the “Albion Greats” wall in the Social Club alongside a number of other “Greats”
Details of Alan’s funeral arrangements will be made available once they are confirmed.
An update from Alan Haspell 's family via Trevor Senior.
Alan’s Funeral will take place at: Christ Church in Barnton - (one-way street), at 11am on Monday, 5th March followed by burial in Barnton Cemetery. The gathering will be at Barnton Cricket Club afterwards. All welcome.
The family have requested that they want the day to be a celebration of Alan’s life.
Very sad news. Not only was he a good player, but knowing him through work he was as good a person you could ever meet. Condolences to family. RIP ALAN.
I knew Alan was in poor health, as I mentioned on his birthday thread a few weeks ago. So this is not entirely unexpected but still extremely sad. I have memories of him as a player and manager in my younger days but most of all as a friend in later years.
A nicer man you couldn’t wish to meet and always convivial company over a glass or three. RIP Alan.
I remember going to watch Witton play at Ellesmere Port in the Cheshire League days and I can’t have been very old but not quite sure exactly. The game was at the Thornton Road Stadium and at the end of the game, dad said “come on let’s get off home.”
I was adamant I wasn’t leaving until I’d spoken to Alan so we waited on the car park afterwards. He came over to us with Mick Metcalf and then we finally left. Made my day seeing him but I don’t think my dad was very impressed with being made to wait.
One of my favourite customers in the Thatched Tavern about 12-15 years ago. We had a group of us that sponsored games at Wincham Park for about 2-3 years. We had some fantastic times, and most games I went home with stomach pains due to laughing so much!
