Alan was one of the best. Quiet unassuming and dedicated to his family and Witton, always conducted himself with good grace and dignity and was a stalwart and fixture of every away coach going back to the Cheshire League and NPL pre WP.
And so the Central Ground in the sky unfortunately has another member.
Awful news, puts into context our little squabbles, really nice lad Alan always remember chatting with him and his dad at the old central ground about all things Witton - a true supporter RIP Al.
Used to live back to back with Al, me in Greenall him in Viccie Road. Walked down the Morgue on a Saturday, some reasons or other never seemed to come back much together though.
Really devastated to hear this. Really nice bloke and a lifelong dedicated wittoner.
I have particularly fond memories of talking football and generally putting the world to rights over a few jars with Al and his dad in The Roebuck back in the Central Ground days.
As well as being wittoners they were both lifelong Man City fans of course. I remember Alan telling me when his dad died that he was glad he’d lived to see their record 10-0 win over Huddersfield just days before.
Well likewise I’m glad Alan’s last City game was that 3-0 whipping of Chelsea and our last result for him was a 6-0.
Just found out about Mr Potts, gutted. An absolute lovely man who would support anything he could at the club. Always a happy soul(despite the terrible games he had to endure at times) in my experience, loads of us will miss him. I would post it but can’t seem to access the forum
Very gutted to hear this very sad news. I’ve known alan for a long time, and he was a dedicated Witton fan and loved the club throughout his life. He was a founder member of the famous Central Ground choir and will be sorely missed. Condolences to all Alans family, Goodbye my friend. RIP
Didn’t think I knew Alan at first but having read these posts I did, although not close was on many away trips with the Albs with him. Another great Wittoner gone to the Central Ground in the sky. RIP Alan UTA
Another sad loss, top wittoner Alan, I remember many away days with him and his defiant dislike of the other lot!
Another who will be missed on the terraces
Have been contacted by Wayne Porter and asked to post on his behalf:
[i]" I have just heard the sad news of Alan Potts demise. Would you please put on the website on my behalf my heartfelt sympathies.
Alan was a really nice and genuine guy. Not only did he love Witton but loved watching all local football. He will be sadly missed by many and Witton will be missing one of their most devoted fans. A perfect gent and one of a minority of genuine football guys.
RIP Alan."

Just got back from Italy after me Hols. I’m gutted about this like everyone else. Alan worked with my late Dad at the Octel and was a great source of Octel tales for me once my dad had passed on. He was one of the original Witton Choir of which I was proud to be a member myself. He was a quiet unassuming guy who loved Witton through and through. Not much I can add to everyone else’s trubutes really accept my sincere condolences to his family and he’ll be sorely missed. RIP Alan
Totally gutted to hear this news last week. Alan was one of my best friends at the club, he was kind and generous with an extremely dry sense of humour, hatred of the green and a love of whisky!
We’d travel to most away games together, spent hours doing the ground up in pre-season and loved a good old boogie at Xmas parties/end of season! And who can forget his “golden goal”.
Truly one of the best Wittoners and gents there was. He is very missed already.
Alan’s funeral will be held at St Helen’s Church (Witton) on Wednesday, 2nd September at 11.00am. I believe, it will be then back to the Witton Albion Social Club afterwards.
