Altrincham vs Witton Albion (CSC1)

Good to see Peter Heler adding to his cropper goals.
Does this put us in the semi-final?

" Reviewing a play at Davenham WHS " Did you pay to get in ?

well done gary, your team selection last nite was spot on.
every player who put that shirt on was man of the match for me
altys team was near as damit their first team.
1st half alty shadied it. 2nd half was wittons with very good
football, better even than at colwyn.
worth every penny of my 5pound entrance fee. 50p cheaper than at witton. :stuck_out_tongue:

and well done to the 25-30 WITTONERS who attended and gave great support, :cheer:

Originally £8 Toneee - so thats £2.50 saved so u can buy me a pint for that ?

Team - Clegg, Neville, Ruffer, Rudd, Booth, Maylett, Henry, Heler, Tandy, Broadhead, mcalinsky. unused subs Pritch, Foster, moseley.
In the second half Tandy was fantastic.
First time ive seen Broadhead but have no concerns about his ability just seemed to struggle in the last 20 mins but that will improve with games.
Pete Heler seems to improving with every game and it was a great finnish for his first goal.
Again Ruffer showed real qulity at the back and showed why the manager is right in playing him instaed of Pritch. The only question is should Rudd be keeping pritch out of the team?

The only question is should Rudd be keeping Pritch out of the team ?
I think not but ask the manager at the Information Meeting !

As for Heler - he IS a good player as was demonstrated in the pre-season games. He has had injury and illness problems and I think is now getting back to match fitness and proving his worth. Credit to GF for keeping faith in him.

Was’nt there last night but am informed that playing against better class players allowed us to play better also.

I dont need to, because i know the answer is yes, because he does. If/when there is a info evening i think it should be to do with club affiars not questioning the manager about his team selctions.

the £2-50 can go to the ground maint fund. :stuck_out_tongue: not on the devils brew.

the hot chesnuts were very nice at alty last nite.

No Eli, I went in my capacity as Art reviewer for the Guardian. However I did take my wife and I did pay for her, I also bought £2 worth of raffle tickets, but more to the point they will be getting a much deserved glowing report in the local press. I believe in supporting local things, shops, pubs, a football team, theatre groups, etc. etc. too many people don’t and that is why all these things in Northwich are struggling.
WHS.

A goal in the third minute of stoppage time saw Albion go through to the next round of the Cheshire Senior Cup against Runcorn Linnets on the 15th December, and on the balance of play there would be few who could argue with the result.

In a game which flowed from one end to the other it was the home side who took the lead on 39 minutes after Albion failed to adequately deal with a corner on the left, leaving Chris Senior to drive home at the near post.

John McAliskey scored just before half-time, but was judged offside…a very dubious decision.

Floodlight problems delayed the second period by 25 minutes, but when the game eventually got underway it only took the visitors four minutes to get back on level terms. A ball down the right to Peter Heler had the midfielder cutting inside his man and from the angle he drove the ball across Stuart Coburn and into the net at the far side.

Albion should have wrapped the game up well before the 90 minutes, as first John McAliskey beat the offside trap to leave himself in a one-on-one situation with Coburn, but it was the keeper who came off best, saving the ball with his legs. Moments later Heler had the chance to record his second goal of the night but from eight yards out he drove the ball well over the top.

It was then the turn of Jamie Tandy to fail to beat Coburn, this time from the 12 yard spot after Albion had been awarded a penalty for a foul on Brad Maylett. Once again it was Coburn who kept his side in the game, diving full length to his right to push the ball away.

The game quickly swung to the opposite end of the pitch and with a free kick on the left driven in, it was the outstretched leg of Lee Neville that cleared the ball off the line.

With extra time looming it was Heler in the right spot at the right time to benefit from a loose ball which had squirmed away from the hands of Coburn from a John McAliskey header to score from close range and to give his side safe passage into the quarter-final.

Overall, this was our best display of the season, even surpassing the Colwyn Bay game.

Gary went for a 4-4-1-1 formation, with Brad Maylett playing a central role just behind John McAliskey. I think John played his best game for us, especially chesting down long clearances into the path of Brad.

Gary got Jamie Tandy to move from his left-sided midfielder role in the first half, to a more attacking left wing role in the second half, where he tore their full-back to shreds. This left a lot of space in front of Lee Neville, who used it to full advantage.

However, this put more pressure on the 2 central midfielders, Paul Henry and Ryan Broadhead, but they coped admirally, albeit they were both shattered towards the end.

The defence was solid, especially Paul Booth, and Peter Heler seems to be improving with every game, and took his goals very well, in particular the first goal from an acute angle.

REPORT
Witton got in the first shot of the night as Maylett forced a decent save from Coburn after a good feed from Heler to the right of centre (2 mins). The referee allowed two wild tackles to go without cautions; firstly Welch scythed down McAliskey from behind (10 mins) before a similar challenge by Witton on Doughty. Alty had won the game’s first corner when Danylyk’s 30-yard shot was deflected out of play (12 mins). But, in truth, there was nothing much to get excited about in the opening stages of the match.

After Coburn had again had to save smartly, this time from McAliskey, a neat lay off from McAliskey then allowed Maylett a shot, which went wide, when the former Swansea City man should have hit the target(20 mins). Witton continued to have the better of the game as Alty’s unaccustomed line-up struggled to string passes together. Two Witton corners now came in as many minutes. The first came when Pearson headed out Maylett’s cross and from the corner Maylett was left unmarked and it took a block by Welch to stop his shot, at the cost of the second flag-kick (23 mins).

On the half hour, Denham forced a save from Clegg, low down, before Colin Little hit the side netting with an effort from right of goal, a minute later. Alty were now improving a bit and won a corner off a sliced clearance. After this, another Denham shot, to the near post, was stopped by Clegg but the ball ran loose for Senior to hook into the net to give Alty a lead which they scarcely deserved (36 mins). But the goal lifted the Robins and from a Denham cross Little soon got in a header but it went over the bar. Next, Young headed wide before a magnificent volley from Denham, the pick of Alty’s players, was stopped by Clegg (39 mins).

Denham then got in another shot before a poor kick by Coburn led to Witton putting the ball into the Alty net but the effort was ruled out for offside (43 mins). Next, Clee did well on the right and from his cross another excellent volley from Denham was goal-bound till Clegg did well to tip it over the bar (45 mins). The resulting corner was unproductive so half-time arrived with Altrincham 1-0 ahead and with their form improving, they looked set to build on their lead in the second period.

Half-Time: ALTRINCHAM 1 WITTON ALBION 0

Witton came out early for the second half but, just before the game was scheduled to resume, the floodlights on the Carole Nash stand side of the ground went out. A year ago, the then newly installed lights had failed a couple of times and expensive remedial work to the electricity supply had been carried out. This time the fault appeared to be traced to a faulty bulb which tripped the power supply. After four failed attempts to get the lights back on, success came with the fifth, with the offending bulb isolated.

The twenty-minute delay to the start of the second half seemed to disrupt Alty more than the visitors who took just four minutes to score an equalizer. However, before that, Alty had won an early corner from which a Denham shot was spilt but regathered by Clegg. Witton’s goal came when Danylyk seemed to be bundled off the ball in midfield and Witton played it forward to Heler, who advanced on the exposed Coburn to score.

Pearson then made a fine 30-yard run upfield before a Senior shot went narrowly wide. Clee was then withdrawn as Burns came on for Altrincham (53 mins). Three of the next four corners went to Witton as Altrincham continued to give away possession. One of the Witton corners arose when McAliskey was deemed to have beaten the offside trap and Coburn had to produce a fine save to keep out his shot (64 mins). Heler then had a great chance for Witton as he, too, got behind the Alty defence but he lifted his shot over the advancing keeper and the bar (65 mins).

Alty attempted to shake things up as Densmore replaced Denham (66 mins) and Williams came on for Welch a minute later. Burns then saw a shot deflected for a corner before Coburn rushed out at the other end to the far touchline. There, he almost lost possession but Witton could not capitalise. An Alty corner came and went but Witton were still playing the more polished football as the game went into the final quarter of an hour.

It appeared to be all over for Alty, eight minutes from time when Williams’s rash challenge on a Witton player, left of goal, gave the Albion a penalty. But Tandy’s spot kick was well saved by Coburn, his third penalty stop this season, the previous two being against Crawley and Oxford (83 mins). Altrincham then almost snatched the tie when, from Densmore’s pass, Little saw his shot cleared off the line with Alty appealing that the ball had crossed the line (84 mins).

As the game approached added time, a Tandy cross went across the Alty goalmouth. With the game entering the fourth added minute, the visitors won the match when they got behind the Alty defence and though Coburn beat out the first shot, McAliskey converted the rebound from close range to put Witton into Round Two.

And so, Alty’s disappointing run continued; they have now lost their last five matches in league and cup. Admittedly tonight they had given starts to several players who were either recovering from injury or from a lack of recent action, but they could have no complaints about the outcome against a Witton team who demonstrated why they are doing well this season in the UniBond League.

Well done on a well deserved victory against us, without any need to play hoofball. Good luck for the rest of the season. Hopefully you will be back in the Unibond Premier next season. Hope you go on to win the Cheshire Senior Cup. Hopefully we will meet in the F.A. Trophy Final. But we need to improve on Tuesday’s performance for that to happen.
