We have received the very sad news of the death of one of the “Albion Legends”.
Archie played for Witton between 1955 and 1963 and was one of only fifteen players to amass over 300 post war appearances - 316 in total - for the Albion.
Initially a good old fashioned centre-forward, from whence he scored the vast majority of his 66 goals, he later switched to the right full back role.
Until only a few years ago Archie was a regular spectator, normally stood to the left of the goal.
Archie passed away on January 30th and his funeral will take place at Christ Church, Barnton on Wednesday February 15th at 12 o’clock.
The club offer their deepest sympathies to his family and friends.
Sad news indeed ! Wittoner through and through !
Have good memories of Archie - use to listen to him and Keith Higgins talking football on the team bus when I was a youngster. First saw him play for Vcs,where he stayed for 6 months before escaping and signing for the Albion. He told me a story about when playing for Vcs against Witton and the president’s ( Jack Ashley ) wife, who was a one-eyed Northwicher, instructed her husband to give the players a £5 bonus if they beat Witton. Witton won the game and Archie was the only one who was happy not to get the £5.
