MATCH REPORT FROM THEIR GAME ON SATURDAY
Ashton United 1st Oct. 2011 FA Cup 2nd Qual.
Sunday, October 2nd, 2011
Underdogs Spennymoor Town comfortably swept aside Evo-Stik Premier Division club Ashton United 3-0 to reach the 3rd Qualifying Round of the F.A.Cup with a scintillating display at a sun drenched Hurst Cross in Greater Manchester.
Moors made light work of the win as they looked fresher, quicker and more importantly deadly in the final third against their opponents who are two leagues above the back-to-back Northern League Champions in the national pyramid. Moors are now just two wins away from reaching the 1st round proper and a bumper pay-day, although their prize money to date is almost £10,000 after their fourth win in this seasons competition sponsored by Budweiser.
Moors were without the cup tied duo Sonny Andrews and Gavin Barton, and there was a first start to the season handed to Stephen Capper. Daniel Moore and Jamie Harwood were also brought back in to the team along with keeper Craig Turns who all missed last weekends draw with Norton.
It was all Spennymoor in the opening exchanges, as Adam Johnston fired a shot wide as did Anthony Peacock who looked very lively as the same two players then combined to send the away fans into euphoria with the opening goal in the 11th minute as Peacock lifted the ball over the advancing keeper and into the net for a fine goal after great movement from Johnston.
Ashton simply had no answer to Spennymoor’s play, and roared on by the barmy army the confidence was sky high in the Moors ranks, who took the game to their hosts. Ashton keeper Smith twice made stops and an Ian Bennett goal line clearance from Gavin Cogdon’s mazy run inside the area denied Moors from doubling the lead.
Ashton’s attacks were few and far between as the closest they came was a shot from Aaron Burns that was well held by Turns when a corner was only half cleared.
The play was mostly at the other end though with Moors breaking in numbers and finding space at will, but for all their efforts they just couldn’t get a deserved second even though they came close on numerous opportunities. Johnston picked up the ball outside the area and curled a shot that beat Smith but flashed inches wide of the post, and the home side were further handicapped as full back Kyle Harrop, already on a booking, recklessly brought down Moore just outside the area and he was sent for an early bath moments before the half time interval.
Moors started the second half as they left the first very much in the accendancy as twice Jamie Harwood sent over deliveries that failed to trouble Smith before Moors were awarded a penalty when Keith Graydon’s cross was adjudged to have struck the arm of Alex Frost and the referee was perfectly placed to point to the spot. Following a delay while the referee booked two home players, Johnston stepped up to put the ball into the top corner although Ashton keeper Smith did get a hand to it but it wasn’t enough and Spennymoor celebrated in style and rub salt into their home side’s wounds.
Captain Lewis Dodds advanced from midfield but failed to pick out Cogdon standing alone, and Peacock had a shot deflected wide before Moore headed a corner from Capper just wide. The home side threw caution to the wind and number ten Peter Wright saw his shot pushed around the post by Turns. Ashton were enjoying their best spell when Wright’s shot looked to be heading into the bottom corner, only for a goal line clearance by man of the match Michael Laws to preserve the two goal cushion.
Moors sub Calvin Smith then wasted a golden opportunity to kill the game off before super sub Chris Lawther – making his first apperance of the season due to injury – wrapped the tie up when he picked up a poor clearance from Smith to race away and finish with aplomb into the bottom corner to ignite wild celebraitions from the players, staff and supporters alike.
There was still time for Turns to produce a stunning one handed save from a point blank Wright header which would have been a mere consolation and Moors saw out the four minutes of stoppage time with ease and book their place in Monday’s draw.

Line-Up:

Turns, Harwood, Laws, Dodds(c), Foster, Capper, Graydon, Moore, Johnston(Lawther), Peacock(Smith), Cogdon(Ruddy).

Subs Not Used:

Ryan, Mason, Dean, Griffiths.

Thanks Geoff, fast work!
They are one league below us and have won it for the last 2 seasons.

Will not be an easy one these North east sides always tend to have good cup pedigrees, but its a home draw and thats all you can ask for.

They also took well over 100 supporters to the last round so should be a decent crowd too. League champions 2 seasons running.

£7,500 to play for.

On balance I think it’s one of the best draws we could have had. It’s great that we’re at home.I was dreading being drawn away somewhere unromantic like Guiseley or Bradford. They’re technically below us in the pyramid but obviously very useful as that result at Ashton proved. Mind you I trust they’ll have taken note of our result on Saturday too! In the league they’ve won 4, lost 4 and drawn 1.

Also let’s hope they turn up because according to their website we’re in Manchester!

Their win at Ashton was their first away win of the season, so let’s hope they don’t get their second when they come to the Help For Heroes Stadium.

They have won their league the last two seasons, so presumably the only reason they are not currently in our league is ground grading issues, so they are definitely a decent side. However, as we have just beaten a BSN team away from home, we should have plenty of confidence about this tie.

Up the Albion!

Hey, Witton_Albion_fc if you find yourself somewhere unromantic like Guiseley or Bradford, just pop down the road to Sunny Otley, it’s lovely.

And has been known to be kind of romantic!

Yes, and £12500 if we get a lucky draw and a win in the next round.

£20,000…now that would bring a smile to Neil’s face!

I have put forward the game against Spennymoor to be considered for the FATV game of the 3rd Round Qualifier.

I have also put forward Matthew Cooper as Player of the Round in the 2nd round Qualifier for his performance on Saturday in keeping a clean sheet.

I believe the FA will shortlist this down to five nominations, then it is upto people to vote on the FA site.

So keep checking the FA website and vote when the vote opens.

Hang on a minute here, let’s not get carried away.

This is less of a “win-able” draw for us than the last round should have been for Altrincham.

Whilst i have every faith in Pritch and his staff to get us properly prepared for this game, we need to make sure we don’t go into it thinking we are already through.

We won on Saturday because we performed to the best of our ability. From what we already know about Spennymoor, it looks to me as though we are going to need to match that performance if we want to make it a round further.

Whilst on paper it looks like an easier draw than our last 2, we all knwo that that isn’t always the case.

I’m told their squad contains a lot of ex-Doncaster players and also a good few from the Durham side that flew up the leagues whilst they still had money.

An easier draw that Alty away it may be, but it’s probably tougher than any other we have had in the last few seasons.

Let’s not lose focus.

No…Let’s just have a day of dreaming, before we start thinking reality.

I did all my dreaming on Saturday eveing TT! The sooner we get our heads set for this one, the sooner we can start dreaming of a trip to Old Trafford or Anfield!!

:silly:

Well said Robbo, nothing easy about this draw in my opinion, we’ll have to be on top of our game again. their record actually shows 4 wins 4 draws and 2 defeats plus 4 wins in the cup so far.

Before that though we have some important league games to contend with starting on Wednesday against a Garforth side on a very impressive run themselves at the moment.

I seriously feel that we are the underdogs here, and i don’t think it does any harm to embrace that tag either (it worked for us against Marine and Alty).

Yes we have home advantage, but how often has that proved to be our undoing in the past? (Congleton, Winsford…etc etc).

I would feel much more comfortable going into this game knowing we have a fight on our hands, rather than just thinking we’ve had an easy draw.

Let’s be very clear, Spenny are a capable side. This is a club that I have seen in recent times. 4 ex Darlington players, including Steve Foster who in May was playing for Mansfield at Wembley in the FA Trophy final and Gareth Waite who I rate highly. He may be getting on but is an extremely good player who could still do a job for Darlo.

Spennymoor are 1 league below Witton and the only reason they aren’t in the EvoStik is ground issues as they have won their Championship for two seasons running, getting over 100 points each time

However, this current Witton team should not fear anyone

Agree with others another tough draw but I think you have to take a home draw and go for it lets hope our fans turn out and the team deliver a result for them, dangerous tie for sure but winnable

Spennymoor will be tough, North East teams usually are and they are no mugs if they can go to somewhere like Ashton and appear to win quite comfortably. The one thing that worries me is that because of their geographical location, it’s difficult to have the opportunity to assess them before the day but then, if we play to our potential then anything can happen.

Yes spennymoor are no mugs, they have a very strong squad, if they had taken promotion in 2009-10 they would now be playing evo prem and in the mix for con north. Best non league team in north east apart from gateshead
