there have been sooo many its unfair to mention but a few - look at the albion wall of greats - there has to be some more added to that very soon to cover the wall completely !!

No mentions so far for Big Jim Mckluskie (that semi final equaliser against Kidderminster), Keith Mason a goalie extraordinaire, our very own Pritch, Nigel Cleghorn who single handedly almost, but not quite, dragged us to promotion…

Agree with all your selections there Knutsfordian. 1990-91 was my first full season watching Witton. We played 40 league games and 34 cup matches, Keith played in every one.bowdown Maybe Mike Moseley could be included also.

I reckon because its “favourite player” then it doesnt mean best player necessarily ! it can be quirky things like loyalty, sheer will to win, flair, trickery, leadership or just because they give you a memory of a certain time in your Witton supporting time so its a very personal thing and for Me no reflection on some of the legends mentioned who were left out, as you say if it were name your Witton legends then it would indeed be a long list.

Some great replies and a trip down memory lane for some

Surprised no-one has gone for Messrs Omotola and Roberts

Let’s be honest, “Mr Witton” may have departed under acrimonious circumstances but he was a great player and manager for us.

Yeh but you could include the whole team at the moment mate as has been said. I went for Hopley but nearly went for Tolani or Roberts, and any of the others too! Its good its so difficult to choose it shows what a great team we have. UTA

Some great names on here. I like all of Eli Gortons list and all the players raised by other people. Loved Keith Mason who was the best goalie I saw for us and a top bloke to boot. Andy Grimshaw what a midfileder he was, even Paul Pogba would be hard pressed to go into a tackle with him and another great name not mentioned was Karl Thomas scorer of ten goals in a week. Going back further Chris Nicholl, 30 goals a season playing midfield Chalky White, and the most underrated player and unsung hero in what was a good team Tony Keyes. There are loads I’ve left out.
The greatest player I’ve seen in Witton colours was Dave Carrick simply because he played in a bad team but still won matches on his own with his sheer brilliance (I too remember the overhead kick), but I know a lot of my older friends quote Sir Alfred Ashley, Frank Fidler, Joe Dale and others from that great team who I unfortunately never saw. I’m also a big admirer of Keith Higgins who I saw play and is now a mate. His knowledge of football is under utilised at our club in my opinion.
But looking at the heading of this its not the best player but your favourite player. My favourite all time player has to be Brian Pritchard simply because I watched him for 19 years and in that time he was so committed and was often called Mr Witton. I also consider him a friend and I don’t want to enter into the recent split with the club. I have my own views on this which I’ll keep to myself but its just a shame whats happened and for me Brian will always be welcome at the club which he loyally served for 19 years.
My big resolution for the New Year is that we get some of our missing fans back. The team is playing so well with 100% committment so its a shame that stay away fans are still staying away. I hope we can we can start moving the club forward in the new year and consolidate all the good work onthe field off it!! UTA Onward and upward!!

Present - Rob Hopley - amongst the most accomplished goalscorers we have ever seen in a Witton shirt. (Wish he’d been with us earlier in his career, definitely would have made the wall)
Past - Unless its a thumbscrews job then going to have to pick more than one(not neccesarily the best but favourites of mine and decent fellas all)

Pritch - Mr Witton for so many years and one of the best defenders and most committed players we will ever see.
Paul Cuddy - Oozed class, and his composure on the ball for a defender was unsurpassed.
Stewie Anderson - Massively underrated but an integral and driving force in Stan’s all conquering Witton team
John Chalky White - First Witton picture on me wall!!! Great box to box player and scored some cracking goals to boot.

Great to look at the past but as a previous chairman once said “Time to roll up our sleeves for the future.”

This is a club with a great history and we have been privileged to watch some great players. No one is discounting the current team or not looking at the future, they will be part of that rich heritage that is WAFC. We love all those who play in the red and white and who give of their best - that will never change and how fantastic it would be to talk of the current team in the same breath as the likes of Mason, Grimshaw, Connors, Anderson, Thomas, Macauley, Pritchard, Mckluskie, Ashley, Fidler. Dale and oh so many others mentioned here …

One would hope that all the players love their mum

Not fussy to mum, preferred a spray or talc.

brendon burke and tony rodwell for me.

Probably the greatest squad in our history…and the best home shirt too.

Can’t argue with that, fabulous memories watching that team that season.
Some great players , my particular favourite as stated earlier in the topic was Andy Grimshaw closely followed by Steve Mcnelis who was the best header of a ball I’ve seen play for Witton.

The best squad I’ve seen in my lifetime but the older generation Wittoners I’ve spoken to that saw the squad of the late 40’s/early 50’s may beg to differ. Impossible to compare I guess. Deffo the best home shirt though still have mine somewhere B)

I seem to recall that you may have chopped the sleeves off so you take it on holiday one year. nono

In my time watching the Albiooooon Brendan Burke, Carl Macaulay, Karl Thomas, Keith Mason, Pritch, Super Michael Mose, Titch in his pomp, Danny Andrews and the current squad to a man!
