FC v Witton

In fact, we won the last 3 quarters of the game 3-2, which is remarkable considering in a lot of games this season, we have struggled towards the end of games.

It could have been better if the referee had done his job late on. Lee Thompson was through on goal, with only the keper to beat, when he was cynically hacked down from behind, right on the edge of the area. My immediate thoughts were a straight red, and the only question was whether or not it was inside or outside of the area. I was gutted when I looked at the referee, and he was making the shape of a ball with his hands.

However, having seen the video, in hindsight, the defender did get some of the ball.

I’ll respond to that by saying I cannot believe how rose tinted people can view that performance.

I left the game early - I am a supporter, but there is a limit to my patience. That is the 1st time I have ever left a Witton game before full time. Does that now make me a fan?!?

I also think we were absolutely outclassed and outfought - They could have scored ten goals and we wouldn’t have any complaints.

We were 5-1 down and it took a penalty save to kickstart a reaction.

I also stick by the shout that when we were 4 down some of the players ‘were not fit to wear the shirt’ A kids team wouldn’t have performed like that imo.

Its great everyone saying on the internet that we should SUPPORT the team, it needs more people opening their mouth and doing just that when there’s a match on.

The Pi**heads did a great PR job for Witton Albion yesterday - I think not.

That would explain the defence’s performance then:)

Give some credit to Nige - he put that right - he was not to know our centre back would have a mare of a game.

Right, first of all i left early yesterday. I had just seen enough. To be honest i could have left after 17 minutes. I can tolerate players being poor, making mistakes, getting played off the park. I can’t watch players who show no fight, no heart, no bottle. At OUR club at this moment in time there are a LOT of people working VERY VERY hard to keep us going. If the players (and i don’t mean all of them in this) showed half of the dedication, heart, and graft that someone like Neil Wilson does off the pitch, then we would not have been so absolutely embarrassed yesterday. And regardless of how you try to tart it up, the fact is that yesterday we were embarrassed. And there were players on that pitch that aren’t fit to wear OUR shirt - and they deserved to be told. If they came off that pitch at half time thinking that that performance was acceptable, then we as a club will not progress. I sympathise with Nige, and i think that he has done a great job up to this point, and he made the right change in bringing Smith off - but he was also the person who sent him out there in the first place, when it was 100% clear on Tuesday that his time in the starting XI is well and truely up.

To call the 2nd half an improvement is very naive. FC had won the game, they were coasting. Had they wanted to i’m sure they could have scored another 3 or 4. We scored 3 goals against a team that were no longer operating in top gear - do not view that as encouraging. Yes we were better in the 2nd half, but honestly could it really have gotten any worse?!

I would say 3 players came out of that game with credit, and those 3 IMO were Thompson, Thacker, and (to sum up how bad the rest of the team were!) Greg Smith.

I still feel that Nige is the right man for the job, but football is a results business and we aren’t getting them right now. I’ll back him for as long as he is in charge - he can’t legislate for the joke of an opening goal that we conceded yesterday for example - but if we don’t win Tuesday then i think he will be in a very difficult position. He’s had faith in a lot of these players, and it’s about time they started repaying that faith and show some pride Tuesday night.

FC UNITED OF MANCHESTER 5 WITTON ALBION 3 attendance 2,201

Team: Smith G.; Scott, Dunne, Burke (Schwarz H/T), Donnelly; Smith S. (Thaker 15), Drew, Willis (Skelton 60), Thornley B.; Thompson & Thornley R. Unused Subs: Pritchard & Millington (GK).

With more than half of this match remaining it seemed, at the time, that the largest league crowd attendance at a Witton Albion match for almost 15 years could well witness Witton’s worst ever Northern Premier League result. That they didn’t bore great testimony to the 11 yellow shirted players that completed this first ever encounter against FC United of Manchester.

With just 14 seconds of the match gone the travelling large contingent of noisy Wittoners were as shell shocked as goalkeeper Greg Smith who was left with no chance at all when a woefully under-hit back pass from Gary Burke was gleefully seized upon by Kyle Wilson and the striker, who was allowed to depart by Jim Vince last season, completed his task with ease.

In the 4th minute Wilson was nicely positioned 15 yards out to collect Smith’s poorly directed punched clearance, following a free-kick floated in from the right, to net his 13th goal of the season and rub further salt into Albion’s wounds. Seven minutes later the rampant home side were three goals ahead, Scott Willis losing possession too easily and Chris Baguley, following a superb 1-2 with another ex Albion player Adam Carden, slotted the ball past Smith.

Smith produced a good save to deny Danny Warrender before at last the 24th minute saw his opposite number Sam Ashton called upon to make a save himself, it came from a low driven in free-kick from Mark Drew and although the keeper failed to hold the ball Willis could only fire the rebound against the top of the right angle and into the massed ranks of United supporters. With Witton coming more into the game ten minutes later Rod Thornley scampered down the right to cross for early substitute Ross Thaker to send his near post shot narrowly wide of the target. Thornley himself then headed over the bar following a free-kick.

Any remaining hopes Albion had of getting back into the match were dashed in the 39th minute when with Burke left for dead by Carden the winger’s cross into the danger area saw Gary Scott seemingly get the last touch under intense pressure from Baguley with the ball ending up in the roof of the net.

In the second of the three minutes stoppage time period another Drew free-kick was only partially cleared and when the ball was played back in LEE THOMPSON bustled his way in to at least bring some respectability back to the score-line.

Manager Nigel Deeley made his second substitution during the break and Albion strived to pull the scores closer but Thompson’s headed attempt went just over the cross-bar. It was therefore somewhat against the run of play in the 66th minute when Jerome Wright wriggled his way through the middle to produce an exquisite chip over Smith for United’s 5th goal.

Five minutes later it looked like Albion’s record defeat would be equalled as Tony Dunne tripped Carlos Roca but Smith produced a great save diving to his right to push away Wilson’s spot-kick. With 15 minutes left and seemingly buoyed by Smith’s heroics Albion really turned the screws on, Drew played a good ball into the path of LEE THOMPSON who outstripped his marker to net with aplomb his 5th goal from six appearances for Witton.

Five minutes later Thompson looked to be repeating the feat but this time Simon Garner managed to firstly impede him, as he bore down on goal, before producing a challenge that the loyal Wittoners, who had stayed on supporting their side, fully expected a red card to be produced by Chorley based referee Kevin Mattocks. Unbelievably though play wasn’t even stopped!

Smith was called upon four minutes from time to produce another great stop when he pushed away Simon Carden’s shot but as the match entered the two minutes of stoppage time it was Albion and ROD THORNLEY who had the final say when cutting in from the right and slotting the ball past Ashton.

Watching big gazza and pooly dancing to happy hour at half time: priceless:laugh:

We really must stop moaning, this is a totally new team built on a shoestring budget, not like the last two seasons when lots of money we did not have was spent without result, then we had reason to moan. Anyone who though we could win the league or even make the play offs was being incredibly optimistic, I did hope for that myself at one point but I also recognised it would be difficult for Mr. Deeley to make it happen. We Wittoners are made of strong stuff, we have to be to withstand the many disappointments that come our way, but when the chips are down we come back stronger than before, remember how a few years ago it looked as if we were going under completely? We came back from that to go close to winning this league twice. This is a “blip” season, give Mr. Deeley the time, give the Club the money, and we will come again but we must be patient. Enjoy our victories but accept that it is unlikely this season that they will outnumber our defeats. But next season? next season will be oh so different if we keep the faith. Donations to the playing fund are needed and any amount will be gratefully received, so give what you can if you really want to see those good days return.

By far the best post you have ever made. Well Done Alan.
Saturday was a bad day at the office. Many were very dissappointed, and rightly so. Not everybody agreed on how we demonstrated our dissappointment, but we are all different, and we pay our money and take our choice.

However, we have to be strong, and show that after we have vented our anger, we are still as strong as ever, if not stronger in our resolve. I have total faith in Nige Deeley, and I am so looking forward to when his dedication bears fruit. It will taste so nice.

Our support (through thick and thin), will only bring that day sooner.

 I’d agree with that. Otherwise very disappointing at Gigg Lane from a Witton perspective. Some prize money from a decent run in the upcoming FA Trophy competition would undoubtedly help bolster the playing budget for the remainder of the league season (otherwise I’m not sure that some of the players on the park on Saturday are up to the job), and who knows, a place in the play-offs may yet beckon?

Ok you are all going to have a go at me here as Saturday was my 1st match of the season. I’m so disenchanted with all levels of football it took my son coming all the way up from Oxford to persuade me to be there Saturday.Coming all the way from Oxford to watch that was not much of a reward.
I’ll start with the negatives and finish with the positives that way perhaps you’ll see that I’m not just having a go here for the sake of it. I’ve not seen evey match like some of you but I read the comments on here like everyone else.
I thought there were at least 6 players who simply were not up for it Saturday. The defence was shambolic and I hate to say our two centre backs were completely overun. I think Nigel god bless him got the starting line up completely wrong and we played right in to FC hands as the one thing they do have is forwards with pace and movement off the ball. Playing the lad Drew at full back might have worked once but he looked good second half passing the ball in midfield behind FC’s defence. The two centre backs are not good enough simple as that and it hurts me to say that Garry Burke looks a shadow of the player he once was unless he was carrying an injury or something. The full backs were also not brilliant though other lads were saying Donnelly was good so I’ll put that down to the rest of the defence being awful.
The midfield was too slow with no bite though Willis did play with some determinitation. The lad Thaker came on and looks a bright prospect and we simply didn’t pass to him enough 2nd half when he was in good positions. To me he did drift out of the game a little like Peers used to do and the stepover trick though nice is not something he should do all the time. He has pace so knocking it past them more often and going after the ball would produced some results I feel. The attack lacks an out an out goalscorer but the service to them is very poor.
So the negatives -
Defence needs a complete overhall The lad Schwarz looks capable and should have started.
Drew at full back a definite no. Use his passing abilty further up the field.
Stick with Donnelly because other lads were saying he is normally ok!
No way we can play the same centre halve combination again!
The midfield some nice touches from Ben Thornley but didn’t do enough. Willis plays with committment but I’m not sure he’s the answer. The lad Smith was way out of his depth.
Up front the lads I feel so sorry for. Rod T never stopped working the Big lad at Centre forward was great but I think we need a goalscorer with maybe Rod dropping back a little deeper.
The minority in the crowd getting on the players back. Yes I moan about players but thats only to the immediate people around me its not shouted onto the pitch or directed at Nigel!
So the positives -:
Despite letting in 5 goals Greg Smith looks to me a great goalie who you can build a team around. great penalty save and others he made I think could only be faulted for the second goal well done Greg.
We have Pritch to come back in. He would have led by example on Saturday and those players not putting effort in would have had no option but to get going with Pritch leading them on the field.
The lad Thaker definately a lot of promise with obviously a few rough edges but lets give him a go because he’ll only learn through his mistakes so sitting on the bench won’t improve him.
Rod Thornley his work rate was brilliant but I think Rod should play behind the front two now using his vast experience to link up play.
Thompson. Fantastic . What he lacks in finesse he makes up for with physical strength and deteminiation. We’d be in the Conference North now if we’d had him in our team last year alongside Warlow despite Vince saying we didn’t need a physical presence!
Nigel Deeley the best coach in the Unibond. There’s the rub lets get Nige doing what he’s good at and brilliant at, COACHING, with someone coming in to take the admin, PR and player negotiation weight off him. We are all asking Nigel to do too much it unfair on the lad I think he needs more help from someone who can bring these things to the table. I know we have an assistant but he seems largly anonymous and to be honest has a poor track record.
The Majority of Fans. Sir Neil Wilson (well I think he should be knighted), Markus Harris, Eli,Rabbit, Robbo (who has talked a lot of sense on this posting), The Pete Robinsons and Sprucies, Jeff Metcalfs and loads of others who I’ve missed out your all positives for the club who work hard in an unsung way.
Obviously from the comments from Thatched Jeff Tavern it looks like Nigel has got something in mind on thge signings front but I do feel he needs more help of the experienced variety and something needs to be sorted soon or relegation is a distinct possibility if we play like we did Saturday. I’m sure it will all get sorted and we can look forward to consolidating with our new team around top of mid table which I feel would be progress give our circumstances this season!!
Its not all gloom and doom lets learn from Saturday and move forward though. I will do my dardest to attend Tuesday as I feel I owe the club and you lot big time for my non appearence but the truth is other things in my life have to take priority just at the moment!
Sorry if this offends anyone its not meant too trying to be constructive honest!

Welcome back MONA !

Just one point u got wrong Mark Drew started right side at FC Utd it was Scott at right-back. But u are right in that he is best playing in misfield.

Don’t be late Tues 7.45 £9 to get in.

Mona who?

Welcome back into the fold Chris

I beleive there is a game tomorrow night, draw a line under what was a bad day at the office and get on with it, no excuses and no bullshit, onwards and upwards:dry:

Oh my lord what a bunch of hypocrites Trace and i got slated for havin a go at the players last year after the Fleetwood game. What was the saying we should get behind the boys. Now however it is we pay our money we can say what we want, leave when we want. Oh yes "they are grown men they dont need wrapping in cotton wool. UNBELIEVABLE

Opinions will always differ, but not our love of the Club. All together now, COME ON THE ALBS!!!
