Tony Greenwood leaves Fleetwood Town
17/09/08
FLEETWOOD, Lancs, September 17, 2008

Fleetwood Town wishes to announce manager Tony Greenwood has left the club with immediate effect. Also leaving the club is assistant manager Nigel Greenwood and first team Coach Andy Whittaker. Whilst under Tony’s guidance the club has enjoyed tremendous recent success, however Fleetwood has made a poor start to the current season and it is felt the appointment of a new management team is needed if the club’s progress is to be maintained.

Tony and his backroom team have played a major role in what the club has achieved both on and off the field. Fleetwood Town would like to place on record grateful thanks for everything he has done at Highbury. The club would also wish Tony, Nigel and Andy every success in the future.

just 8 or 9 games into the season and new manager please.

if i was a betting man i say he will appear tuther side of the pennines?.

Danny Johnson from Ashton, John Reed from Buxton or Lee Ashcroft from Kendal would be all in with a shout.

No chance that JV would be considered, he doesn’t have the best record does he??

Again another club presses the panic button.

hahahahahahahahaha, and it was all looking so rosy for the cods a couple of months back. Great news!!

first the pier self destructs and then club, shame isnt it.

I’m disgusted that a guy who has done a massive amount for Fleetwood, is now judged on less than 10 games at a higher level for them.

The club never has had any class

No doubt some Ex-Football League player who knows jack 54it about non-league will be appointed.

Former Crewe Alex favourite Steve Macauley was on the backroom staff as a Physio and coach but left the club during the summer. By all accounts he contributed a great deal behind the scenes, perhaps so much that his abscence has lead to a dip in form?

Still, three promotions in four seasons should have bought Greenwood more time to turn things around.

Loyalty? Football? those two words just do not go together these days. Only supporters are loyal, most paid staff do it for the cash, and the cash only, especially the players.
WHS.

Possibly WHS but I would like to say now that the current management would not be at Witton Albion if they were here for the money, that is a fact and I don’t mind being quoted on that. I will go futher all groundstaff, stewards, ticket sellers, turnstiles, and for that matter board members are doing everything for Witton Albion no other reason. Maybe our stats expert Chad could tell us the last time that happened.

Would have to agree completely with Chad Jnr.

The board at Fleetwood have behaved appallingly in getting rid of Greenwood. I have never been a fan of the bloke but you cannot question the success they have enjoyed under his management. The club appear to have delusions of grandeur, believing they are far bigger and more important than they actually are.

To have taken them to BSN, it would not have shown a lack of ambition to have settled for some consolidation and to have built the next phase of their growth on some solid foundations. Instead their appears to be extensive spending, ground development and belief that they should continue to be a top of the league club every season. If they don’t get there then what happens, does the money get pulled out and they slide back one or two leagues?

Greenwood appears to be a casualty of their ambition and as a result one of their biggest assets has been dispensed of at the first sign of trouble. There must be a few people up there with a short memory!

There is no divine right to success and he seems to have been shown the door before given chance to build a side to compete in that division.

Let’s not forget their fans were calling for his head after their defeat away at Gateshead last season… It was only a matter of time before his luck ran out.

On one side, he has had a very big budget in relation to some clubs at the level he has been working at. However, his record does speak for itself and therefore you would think that he had earned a little more time than he has been given.

Unfortunately, at any level of football, fans and chairmen want/expect instant success. I think that eventually the wheels will fall off at Fleetwood and they will be back where they started.

I think the wheels are in motion and descending.

I know our workers are loyal, they do it for the love of the Club and I have no doubt whatsoever that Pritch and Mr. Deeley are in it for the love of the club. But let us be realistic, players, managers, are inavariably in it for one thing, hard cash. I don’t mind that as long as they give their all while they are with a club, but let us not be misled by this “kissing the badge” thing, they only love the club whilst it pays them more than they can get elsewhere. I sell tickets at half time, I buy a fivers worth and I pay to get into the ground and I am damn sure everyone else working for our club does as much, if not more. We will come again because of these workers and supporters who will ensure that money is made available to pay the players. Players come and go, the Club will go on forever!!! (What a bloody ramble that was!!)
