A goal deep into stoppage time by James Hooper for Witton earned them a draw in a hugely entertaining game last night at the Essity.
Just like they did in their game against Marine, the previous week, Flint raced in an early lead, when with just a minute played, a delivery from Jake Phillips on the right was smartly turned in by Jack Kenny. The Silkmen went on to dominate much of the play in the first period, putting together a series of slick moves, and should have increased their lead. Conor Harwood was tripped in the box on 39 minutes, but Witton keeper Rajaan Gill pulled off a good save to deny Harwood, who had got up to take the spot kick.
After the break, the visitors imposed themselves more on the game, and the Flint defence were being put under much more pressure. Ryan Woods had to be alert to pull off a fantastic double save with a couple of minutes remaining. But with virtually the last kick of the game, the ball was played into the path of Hooper, and he swept it into the roof of the net.
This was another great work out for Neil Gibson’s side, and once again he took the opportunity to introduce a number of Academy players into the action, which would have been valuable experience for them.
Our thanks to Witton for providing such strong opposition, and we wish them every success for the coming season.
