We could and should have capitalised on our early pressure, we had half a dozen corners and several free kicks inside the opening 30 minutes and Witton were on top when Frickley scored.
Had we have been awarded the penalty (probably the clearest you will ever see in a game), then this might have changed things. Having not scored with the wind behind us it was always going to be a difficult second half.
I didn’t think that James looked 100%, Mike struggled to get in the game and overall we lacked creativity. Frickley are probably one of the worst footballing sides I have seen this season and therefore coming away with nothing from the game was disappointing. In fairness they put us under pressure for the first 20 minutes or so after the restart but they lacked any quality whatsoever.
Ref was a joke (for both sides). The bookings he made were ridiculous and the fouls he didn’t book far worse than those he did. Not awarding the penalty, the yellow card for Pritch and not booking their player for the foul on Thomo were all examples of his incompetence. I would actually say that overall the refs have not been bad this season but this guy was dreadful.
Frickley is never an easy fixture (it’s almost worth getting bl**** relegated not to have visit the place)! We need to get some character back on Tuesday and realise that there is still a big job to be done.
Agree about the ref. I scored him very low indeed.
I didn’t realise you were at the match. Have you sent a report in to the press?
I sent the following:
The game was dominated throughout by a very strong blustery wind, which made playing good football very difficult.
Although Witton had corner after corner, kicking with the wind in the first half, they failed to take advantage of the conditions. Witton were hampered by the loss of Neil Black after 23 mins to a hamstring injury.
The game sparked into life shortly afterwards, when the Witton players stopped playing whilst they surrounded the referee for a hand ball penalty decision. Witton were nearly punished, as the referee waved play on and Frickley’s Peter Knox only had the keeper to beat, but his shot was forced wide by the wind, at the other end.
On 36 mins, Frickley went ahead against the run of play when (Frickley’s answer to Stoke’s Delap) Steve Robinson launched a powerful throw-in low into the box. Everybody missed it, and it fell to Lee Morris on the back post to tap it in.
Lee Thompson had a couple of chances late on in the half, when he wriggled past defenders, only for Adam Nicklin in the Frickley goal to deny him.
Totally different game in the 2nd half, as Frickley made full use of the conditions to peg Witton back. Jamie Speare made 2 point blank amazing saves to keep Witton Albion in the game,
However, on 69 mins, Brian Pritchard failed to get good contact on a back header, as the wind took it away from him. Peter Knox charged through, and although Speare dived out and got 2 hands to the ball, Knox kicked it out of his hands into the net.
Steve Pendrick came on for Ollie James, as Ollie was tiring from his recent injury.
New signing Brad Maylett came on for Kieran Lugsden for the last 24 mins, and showed some nice touches.
Overall, Frickley played the conditions far better than WItton, and Witton tired to easily in the 2nd half.
