friendlies

noticed over the last couple of days that bamber bridge and stocksbridge ps have had attendances of over 1500 which will give them a few extra pounds in their coffers so why do we insist on playing nobodies.we are surrounded by 30+ league sides and surely could get atleast one of them to play us so we can get some much needed cash in to the club.

Good point but I wonder how much top clubs charge for turning up, they are not noted for being very charitable.

Good point posty!

If you want, I will point you out to our new secretary, so that she can give you some Witton letter headed paper so that you can send some requests for friendlies against premiership teams next year.

ok,i’ll give it a try but the 2 league teams were PNE and SHEFF UTD but if you only want prem teams just give me 20.

It would appear Postyred that our back room staff are not totally useless and have actually tried to get such fixtures!! Knowing some of the people involved I very much doubt if any idea to bring in more cash has not already been considered or tried. Our team on the pitch may have been poor over the last couple of seasons but that has certainly not been the case off the pitch and they do not get paid in most cases!!
WHS.

Just hope we can get 11 players if you do Matt

WHS where on that post did i say anybody was useless.if nobody at the club does’nt want to ask the league clubs i’m more than happy to have a go but we surely must find a way to get money in to the club as this season we cant rely on away support to increase our gates and we cant keep relying on the same people to raise money ie predictions, golden goal,lottery,200 club and bucket collections.

Your right postyred, get stuck in and give it a go thats what we need all to get involved and try and improve things UTA

You missed the point, I think Thatched Tavern was being sarcastic!! Our backroom staff would have already tried to get better opponents, they have succeeded in the past, but which team wants to play a side so low down in the league structure? They want a competitive match not a walk over.
WHS.

Your wrong Alan, I was not being sarcastic! I am a big believer of getting more people involved in running the club. The numbers at the moment are far too small. The more people involved, the more understanding of the complexity that our volunteers have to deal with.

Don’t we have a friendly with Liverpool? They used to be pretty good I believe, even won a European cup or two (though never managed to beat the mighty Forest in that competition let’s not forget…). I am all for free speach on this forum but criticizing the pre season friendlies for not having Preston among them when they have Liverpool on the list seems to me like someone is really bored and needs the season to start again…

I find it difficult to believe that no one tried to get a big club to play us, though as Chris points out we will play Liverpool.

The last time I held the position as Football Secretary, I wrote to the 7 biggest clubs in the area. I did this 6 months before the friendly season started, in the hope of getting in early.

Of the 7 clubs, only one bothered to reply. That was Manchester United, and Alex Ferguson wrote in his letter that it was to early to make a decision on Friendlies, and asked me to contact him again at the end of April. When I wrote to him in April, I never got a reply.

I am sure the backroom team did all they could.

Another point to note on this is that Preston and Sheffield are literally on the doorstep of Bamber Bridge and Stocksbridge respectively (within just a few miles if you google the distances) so its hardly surprising there are big gates for friendlies like that given the size of PNE’s and Sheffield United’s fan bases. I suspect that the majority in Bamber Bridge and Stocksbridge support said clubs (and Wednesday!) either separately from, or in addition to, their local non league clubs. We do not quite have the same luxury here, our equivalent would probably be Crewe Alex but I doubt we’d get anywhere near 1,500 for that game.

Agree entirely with the sentiment of postyred though, we need to get as much extra cash into the club as possible and its unfair relying on the same people year in, year out.
