TIMES - http://www.timesonline.co.uk/article/0,,2-1051199,00.html

Streaker tackle earns a red card
By Lewis Smith

A FOOTBALLING policeman who tried to tackle a streaker who leapt naked into a goalmouth m?l?e was astonished to find out who was sent for the early bath. While the streaker wriggled out of his clutches to the safety of the stands, it was the player who received his marching orders.
Brian Pritchard was playing in the non-league game between Witton Albion and Woodley Sports when it was interrupted in the 60th minute. As might be expected of a policeman, the Witton captain stuck out his leg to bring down the criminal in the very act of his crime, only to be promptly sent off for violent conduct.

Witton went on to lose the Unibond Cheshire Senior Cup Final 2-1 in extra time. Fans were astonished as Mr Pritchard, 29, walked off.

A club spokesman said that an appeal was underway. He added: ?Our central defender Brian Pritchard was sent off for apprehending a streaker, which was deemed violent conduct. We got a corner and as the ball went into the box suddenly a streaker appeared on the pitch. Our player tripped up the streaker and was sent off. We are appealing.?

The match was played at Altrincham Football Club in Cheshire where an official said: ?It was just one of those things. We provided stewards for the match but they would have needed the speed of Thierry Henry to catch that streaker.?

Witton spectators are convinced that the streaker and the referee?s decision cost their team the cup but Woodley fans would have none of it. ?The only tackle you made all night was on the streaker,? one fan said.
