I have just been informed that sadly Ken Winnington passed away this weekend, Ken I’m sure a lot of the older posters on here will know was a regular at the old central ground and up to ill health stopped him, came to many games at Wincham Park, His son Mark and Grandson Rob are still regulars and I’m sure you will join me in passing on our condolences to all the family.
A charming man and a great Crown Green Bowler, he will be sadly missed.
WHS.
Really upset about this. Ken was a character and as WHS says a great bowler. He was a Wittoner of the old school and often talked to me about the successful team of the late forties early fifties confirming a lot of what my own dad used to tell me that they were very definately the greatest team this town has ever seen!
My sympathies to Mark and Rob on their sad loss
Also forgot to mention it was a relative of the Winnington clan that scored the first ever goal on the old Central ground. Jesse Winnington I think in 1910. Maybe Chad can confirm?
Firstly my own sincerest condolences to Ken’s family as another Wittoner is taken to that big playing filed in the heavens.
Mona has already mentioned the family connection and although I wasn’t there personally - contrary to what a few may think - it was Jesse Winnington whom netted the first ever goal at the Central Ground on November 26th 1910, shame though it was for Macclesfield in the 2-2 draw. He soon saw the errors of his ways though as the following season he was wearing the No 7 shirt for the Red & White stripes
For those that might be free, I know its short notice but Ken’s funeral service will be at Hartford Methodist Chapel, Beach Road Hartford at 11.30 on Tuesday Morning.
Thank you all on your kind comments on my Granfather passing on. He was always a keen Wittoner and after watching them for many a year kept in touch with how the team was doing through either myself or my dad Mark.
Well remembered about my Great Grandfather Jesse indeed being the first goalscorer at the Central Ground! We are glad to have 1 picture of him playing for Witton which a copy of, is in the club shop.
Regards Robert and Mark.
