UNITED HOPING TO HIT THE GROUND RUNNING AGAINST WITTON
By Tom Parker
Lincoln United face Witton Albion on Saturday (3K.O) in their opening game of the new Unibond Premier Division campaign at Ashby Avenue, writes Tom Parker.
Witton, who missed out on promotion by the narrowest of margins on goal difference last season, before losing to AFC Telford in the Unibond Premier Play-offs will be tough opponents for John Ramshaw’s new-look Whites.
Witton will pose a potent attacking threat following their goalscoring exploits last season. They were the highest goalscorers in the league scoring ninety goals with twenty-four being supplied by ex-Crewe striker Adam Warlow.
Ramshaw has overseen a massive overhaul of players this summer with United only retaining four – Danny Brooks, Ben Brown, Gio Carchedi and Gary Walters- of John Wilkinson’s first team squad from last season, whom finished in a highly respectable 15th position despite three successive defeats to end the campaign.
Ramshaw will return to the dug-out today following his commitments in the U.S.A, where he has been holding summer soccer schools, and will be hoping to the hit the ground running in the competitive Unibond Premier Division.
Following a decent pre-season United will give league debuts to many of their exciting new acquisitions including: goalkeeper Ben Scott, Iain Screaton, Lee Mellon, Jon Douglas and Rob Norris, who scored four goals in two Lincolnshire Senior Shield games during pre season.
Two players, defender Richard Butler and striker Ben Good, are both unavailable for the game as they serve suspensions picked up during the last season.
