Macclesfield FC v. Witton Albion(Emirates FA Challenge Cup Third Qualifying Round)

Witton face what is one of the toughest tests when they travel to Macclesfield FC in the Third Qualifying Round of the Emirates FA Challenge Cup on Saturday.

The Silkmen saw off South Shields in the previous round as Witton were securing their place by beating Crook Town in County Durham.

The two clubs have met a few times in the competition in the past as Macclesfield Town, but haven’t faced each other since Macclesfield FC were formed, apart from in the league.

Witton are unbeaten against the Silkmen since their reformation and took four points from them in their last league meetings.

A 1-0 win at the U Lock It Stadium courtesy of a Joe Duckworth goal, was followed by a 1-1 draw at The Leasing.com Stadium during the 2022/23 season.

Witton’s last victory against the Silkmen in the Emirates FA Challenge Cup goes as far back as the 1981/82 season, when they met in the Preliminary Round at the Central Ground.

A brace from Mark Leonard and a Chalky White penalty secured Albion’s passage in a 3-1 win.

Of the current Witton squad, Lee Jackson and Elliot Rokka have appeared for both clubs, the latter having played for Macclesfield in both of their guises.

The game will be something that some of Witton’s younger players haven’t experienced before, but they will go there with hope of causing a shock and with this being cup football anything is possible.

Team wise Witton will be without forwards James Hooper and Vani Da Silva both cup-tied but Kevin Spinelli is likely to feature and will be in confident mood following his opening goal for the club at Chasetown in midweek.

Kick off at The Leasing.com Stadium is 3pm.
