New Striker

BREAKING NEWS: Albion swoop for striker
Exclusive By Andrew Simpson

WITTON have signed former Chester City front runner Kevin Rapley.

The 30-year-old switches to Wincham Park from Blue Square North outfit Barrow.

And Jim Vince reckons his arrival sends an ominous message to Witton’s title rivals.

“They’ll read about this and shake their heads,” he told the Guardian today.

"I’ve been trying to get Kevin since last season but he decided to move to Barrow.

“Things haven’t worked out for him there and so I’m delighted he’s agreed to come and help our push for promotion.”

Rapley bolsters an already formidable front line that includes UniBond Premier Division top scorer Adam Warlow, former Alty striker Rod Thornley and prolific ex-Skelmersdale United marksman Tony Evans.

But Vince disagrees he has too many forwards.

“Football changes very quickly,” he said.

"And I want us to be as prepared as we can be for the remaining 11 games of the season.

“By having a forward like Kevin who can complement the way we play is a huge bonus.”

Rapley was a Conference National title winner with Chester in 2004 but left the following season to sign for Droylsden, where he was part of the team that lost in the Conference North play off final to Stafford Rangers.

He joined Leigh RMI after that, scoring the goals that helped them avoid the drop last year.

His next move was to Barrow in October but, following the sacking of Phil Wilson, he fell out of favour under new boss Darren Sheridan.

“We’ve got ourselves a striker with a bit of cunning,” added Vince.

"He is great at holding the ball up and creating openings for other people.

“I know he’ll be a huge asset to us.”

Yet another quality signing!

I think the message is clear - no resting on laurels, no mistakes and (where possible) nothing left to chance. We are going to give it everything!!

Kevin Rapley (born 21 September 1977 in Reading) is an English footballer. After playing for several Football League and non-league clubs, Rapley is now playing on loan for Vauxhall Motors from Barrow.

The striker began his career with Brentford as an apprentice, going on to make 51 Football League appearances for them. He later played in the league for Southend United (loan), Notts County, Exeter City (loan), Scunthorpe United and Colchester United, before joining Nationwide Conference side Chester City in July 2003. His first season at the club ended with Chester winning the title and promotion back to the League, where he played for one more season (but part of it was spent on loan at Forest Green Rovers). Unfortunately, he struggled to land a regular place in the Chester side throughout his time at the club and had a poor scoring record, meaning it came as no surprise when he was released by the club in 2005.

Rapley’s 2005-06 season started well but petered out through the season, which ended with Droylsden losing to Stafford Rangers in the Conference North play-off final on penalties. A few months later he moved to Leigh RMI, where he helped them avoid relegation from the Conference North at the end of 2006-07.

In October 2007, after 12 goals from 32 appearances at Leigh, Rapley moved to Barrow, who were also struggling in the Conference North. The fans at Barrow reacted positively to the move, believing Rapley’s wealth of experience would lift them up the table and he enhanced his reputation by scoring in a 1-1 draw with Football League One side A.F.C. Bournemouth in the FA Cup First Round in November 2007.

On 3 January 2008, Rapley joined Vauxhall Motors on loan to gain match practice [1].

Kevin Rapley is known for being one of the few players below League 2 to have a dedicated website.
