Happy days central grounder,i remember carrying the board round the edge of the pitch at half time with the winning half time draw number on it.
Heh heh! Happy days indeed, StevieG. I used to wear my red & white bobble hat that my gran knitted for me, and remember one young lad that had one of those huge wooden rattles painted red & white; I always wanted one, but my old feller wouldn’t make one for me!
Do you remember standing behind whichever goal we were attacking in the first half, then running down to the other end (under the covered enclosure where the old blokes used to stand) to get to the other end for the second half? I used to stand right behind the middle of the goal, leaning against that white painted concrete wall. You were so close you could smell the linament that the players had rubbed into their legs!
I also remember singing “Mellor for England!” - little did we know that he would move to Burnley then end up playing for Fulham in the FA Cup Final.
You used to walk down the side of the Plaza cinema to get to the ground; my mum used to drop me off on Witton Street, then do her shopping and go for a coffee in Bratt & Evans until the game had finished. All my family still live in the Weaverham, Hartford & Northwich areas, but only one of my cousins was a Witton fan. All the rest of the family were Vics supporters (one of my uncles used to play for Vics), so Cheshire League “derbies” down at the Drill Field were great occasions!
Two for mw please, one with James Lowe on it, one with Alan Lowe on it. (Got to start them early!!
