NEWCASTLE TOWN 2 WITTON ALBION 3

UniBond Premier Albion came from behind to edge out their North West Counties hosts at the very humid Lyme Valley Stadium.

With two weeks left to the start of the league campaign Manager Jim Vince used 19 players in this latest friendly against the team managed by the former Albion player-manager Nigel Gleghorn. One worry though was to see Carl Frost suffering an achilles heel injury in the pre-match warm-up and not starting.

The opening goal came on 18 minutes when Mike Moseley, following up a long through ball, saw his effort blocked by the out rushing home goalkeeper. However the errant clearance only found its way to CHRIS GAHGAN and he very coolly despatched a 30 yard low shot into the unguarded net.

Town equalised on 32 minutes in controversial circumstances, the ball appeared to have crossed the goal-line but with no flag raised and Albion defenders having stopped Richard Minor took the opportunity to apply the finishing touch.

Ten minutes into the second period the home side took the lead, when former Albion striker Darren Twigg beat Brian Pritchard to a header and with substitute goalkeeper Mark Westhead, having come out of his area, stranded in no man?s land the ball trickled over the line.

This spurred Witton into raising their game and after defender Tom Spearritt had seen his header tipped away by the keeper it was SHAUN WHALLEY who produced the goal of the game on 65 minutes. He collected the ball 40 yards out to run 15 yards before delivering a shot wide of the keeper?s left hand.

The match result was settled five minutes later after Moseley had lost out in a challenge but with the ball not cleared ex Crewe Academy forward ANTHONY MARSHALL seized the opportunity to shoot home from 15 yards out.

TEAM:- Worsnop (Westhead H/T); Hockenhull (Brown Ally 65), Connors (Marshall H/T), Pritchard (Furnival 70), Barras, Spearritt; Brown Alex (Trainer 78), Jones (Foy 70), Gahgan; Moseley (Haughton 78), Whalley (Hamilton-Hendricks 69)
