Poynton2 v Witton Reserves 1
Cheshire Amateur Challenge Cup
Saturday 22 October 2011
Team: GK Newton, Jones, Carter, Bowyer, Watkins, Burgess, Kenyon, Hindley, Woolley, Randle, Swann
Subs used: Dorigo, Massey, Harrison
The first half was a non-event as not many chances were created by either team, going up the slope Witton withstood the strength of the mature Poynton side, who sit 2nd in the mid-cheshire league.
Tom Swann tried time after time and was constantly fouled. Just before half time Bowyer and Kenyon collided defending a Poynton attack. Bowyer taking a knock to his knee, struggled on to the break. Going in at half time I felt quite relaxed about the game.
Half time Poynton 0 Witton 0
Newton was replaced in goal by Massey at half time. Witton now playing down the slope started to get more of the game, but failing to create many chances. Bowyer had to be replaced by Harrison. Randle and Burgess quality gave us hope, Swann still being constantly fouled, but no decision from the referee, until Swann fouled again and the referee gave the decision to Poynton. Witton players were stunned and Poynton scored by chipping Massey from distance. Against the run of play Poynton scored again. The Poynton keeper made a brilliant save on just the one occasion Witton had a shot. In the last minute Witton got a penalty from a handball and Swann scored.

Witton MOM 17 year old Sam Burgess.
From my point of view it has been a contrasting week. We played at Workington on a good pitch, good officials, against very good players, Witton players rose to the occasion. So there lies the problem… 4/5 of my players today retained their performance from last week, the rest dropped to another level. You can only recommend players to the first team who week after week maintain a high level of performance regardless of the opposition.
