MARINE 0 WITTON ALBION 2
Att. 413

Witton broke anchor from the league’s basement with a hard-earned victory over the Mariners!
Lee Thompson’s blistering individual start could have seen the visitors take the lead inside the first 20 seconds; he found himself unmarked on the edge of the box but his shot rolled agonisingly wide of the right post.
It took less than sixty seconds for the returning striker to atone for the miss! A searching ball over the Marine defence found Thompson free in the box and his fierce left foot strike was too accurate and too powerful for Sean Lake to stop.
Thompson’s return to the starting line-up was watched by the man who has restricted the player’s recent appearances. Mike Moseley’s scheduled return to Bradford Park Avenue was delayed by their postponement and the Albion favourite could only have admired the confidence of the finish.
Witton had further chances to extend their early lead, Neil Black was thwarted twice by Lake as the visitor’s carved open Marine’s frail defence.
Hampered by the facing wind Alvin McDonald’s side looked anything but play-off contenders. High balls to Tuck and O’Donnell were either dealt with by the conditions or the impenetrable partnership of Pritchard and Booth who towered over their opponents.
Ashley Dunn bossed the midfield for Albion, whereas the Mariners were lifeless without Lawless. The club’s former midfielder received only an FA warning for his controversial taunts away at FC United, however was shown the door at the Arriva Stadium on Tuesday.
Marine’s improved second half response was still unable to break the Albion backline. They came closest on the hour when Paul Woolcott’s 35 yard free kick crashed against the angle of post and bar. Restricted to long range attempts, Phil Brazier’s effort five minutes later was narrowly over the bar.
Greg Smith, enjoying one of his quieter afternoons in the Witton goal, was called upon in the final stages, producing a good save from substitute Darren Brockfield’s drive.
Witton’s one goal lead looked like being enough, however in time added on a counter attack down the left sealed the win. James Olsen ran the ball into the box and his low cross found the net off the heal of a Marine defender.
Only North Ferriby can boast more wins on the road than Witton, of Albion’s seven victories this term six have been away from Wincham Park!
