Top of the table Bamber Bridge played 3 and 9 points, so bottom of the table Witton needed a big improvement. Witton had 5 players coming back into the side since the last game against Mossley and 3 new signings in the starting line up.
Witton players settled down quickly and going forward created many chances and on 15mins Tom Swann finished well inside the box. Witton’s new good form continued and on the half hour Jack Woolley got his first goal for Witton. Bamber reacted by sending on first team player Damien Green, and his influence on the game resulted in a goal just before half time.
Second half Witton continued to impress, but the third goal would not come. On 75mins Bamber equalised. There was nothing between the two sides at this stage. Witton had all 3 subs on. But on 85mins, 17 year old Captain Sean Tierney brought the ball out of defence only to be fouled, falling badly on his shoulder Sean could not continue. Sean had given a powerful, solid performance. Witton had to finish the game with 10 men. It was on the last kick of the game that Bamber got the winner.
A very harsh defeat, but lots of positives for the future. Dominic Randle playing in the hole influenced the play and I can’t remember him giving the ball away all game. Sam Burgess 17 signed from Christleton (also plays for Cheshire) complimented Tierney in midfield. Jake McGarry’s work ethic for a forward was tremendous.
Unfortunately Tierney spent Saturday evening at the hospital and will miss work this week, and could be out 3-4 weeks, with torn ligaments in his shoulder and slightly sprung his collarbone.
A lot of work has been done since our last game to improve performance, bringing in new players, and hopefully more this week, and we can keep progressing. Losing 4 games back to back really starts to test you as a manager especially when Ernie is on your case!
