Going back to our time in the Cheshire League and the early days of the Northern Premier League, I seem to remember that Witton used to put out a retained list for the following season.

We don’t seem to have done that for a number of years now and the only time we seem to hear about players these days, is when other clubs announce they have signed someone from us.

It’s because you cannot register a player till mid July.

So until then they are all free agents unless tied to a contract, announcing a signing is dangerous because other clubs can spot the notice and offer more money.

Non league has changed too with money.
