Witton’s Emirates FA Challenge Cup campaign gets underway on Saturday afternoon when they make the long trip to Northern League First Division Seaham Red Star in the First Qualifying Round. The County Durham-based side find themselves in seventeenth place in their respective league having lost four of their opening seven league games including a 2-0 defeat to Sunderland Ryhope in midweek. However, their Emirates FA Challenge Cup campaign has so far seen them progress through two rounds already to get to this stage, having beaten Penrith and Guisborough Town respectively. Witton’s league form has been good so far and now they can turn their attention to other things at least for one day. Last season saw Witton progress through to the final Qualifying Round where they put in a decent performance against National League Solihull Moors but were unable to overcome their opponents, went on to meet League One Blackpool in front of the tv cameras. Witton will be looking to put another run together in the cup as the financial incentives can be massive for nonleague clubs particularly at our level and below. Games against Northern League opposition are usually keenly contested and they prove tough opponents so Witton will not be taking them lightly and will need to be on form to progress in the competition. Kick off at The Ferguson Motor Repairs Stadium is 3pm.
