South Shields vs Witton Albion.

Witton kick off their Evo-Stik Premier Division campaign on Saturday afternoon when they make the long trip to the North-East to take on last season’s First Division North Champions South Shields. The Mariners swept everyone aside in the division at the first attempt, following their promotion from the Northern League the previous season, their third promotion in three years. In that time, they also took the FA Vase beating Cleethorpes Town at Wembley. The Mariners have built a strong squad over that time under the management of former Aston Villa & Blackburn Rovers forward Graham Fenton and Lee Picton, bringing players in from all over the North-East from clubs such as Darlington, Hartlepool and others although there have been some departures in the summer they still continue to build. Mariners Park very often sees attendances of over four figures in fact, every home league & cup fixture last season probably achieved that. Witton go into the campaign looking to make a positive start in what is the toughest opening to the season but you have to meet them sometime and at least it gets perhaps the longest trip out of the way early on. South Shields of course put an end to one on Witton’s cup runs quite early last season but now, they play their first ever game at Premier Division level and a bumper crowd is expected. New personnel on both sides will be looking to get their respective clubs off to a positive start. Kick off at Mariners Park is 3pm.

Derek, Who is ‘‘Rambo’’ , the big lad, left front on the new team picture ???, they will not mess with that lad, what a stopper !

If you mean the one in the white top, it’s Paul Houghton.

The player on the far left of the front row is Shane Williams, he’s featured in pre season and is a Trialist. He has been on the books of Birmingham City. He scored in a trial game for Witton Albion Under 21’s Development Squad against Winsford Over, and was involved in bringing about the penalty at Droylsden last week from which James Foley scored.

So the real stuff starts here, team selection is as ever hard but I’d go with;

Hall
Yates, Gards, Humphreys, Wilson, McKenna
Owens, Smart, Foley
Hopley Jones

With a decent bench of Devine, Wardle, Noone, Lingouba, Brewster & Keeper?
Assume Matty is still getting fit after pulling up at Droylsden? A good team and capable of an upset GOOD LUCK UTA

At last we get the season starting. I think we will get a result, 1-1 to give us a good start.
Good luck to the team, just play as you did last season and the results will come.

Not sure at the moment, might be worth asking at the club.

Strange team set up with our new centre mid Billy Smart playing at centre half? whilst we had two players who are defenders on the bench in Wilson and Gards! Thats how it was reported and looks that way from the video. Any way a decent effort from the Albs and a point would have been great.

C.J., I was at the game & Billy Smart played in midfield. Wardle, Hopley & Humphreys played at the back & looked solid enough.

South Shields fans saying we were defensive and one even said we were time-wasting from the 60th minute onwards.

South shields fans see what they want to see, they said Witton were committing foul after foul but they forgot to mention they had 5 yellow cards one on Josh Wardle that if it was 10yards further up the field would have been a red & there keeper was as busy as Witton keeper .

Maybe just as bad if not worse putting Rob in defence ! never mind I am sure we will be a bit more attacking at Home UTA
