Yesterday i mentioned to Gards on Facebook that it would make sense for non league to play from March to November.
There would be very few postponed games and as Super League found out the gates would increase as watching Sports on a warm sunny day is much more fun than a freezing cold Tues night in January!
My theory is that once the Premier league ends in May there’s a good 3 months where fans of big clubs may decide to get their football fix watching local non league clubs hence more revenue plus who knows they may prefer watching real football and continue with their local team.
It was pointed out that this would have a knock on effect for the FA Cup but let’s be honest very few non league teams are still in the FA Cup by December and the ones that are could carry on until there knocked out.
It then came to me that in 2022 the World Cup is taking place in the Winter so talks are already in place to reschedule the league seasons around that event so maybe non league should start it off as an experiment and see how it works?
The thought of having a lovely cold beer on a warm Saturday afternoon in July on the terraces at Wincham Park is certainly better than freezing to death and having endless games called off!
Interesting point. I think if this was thought through properly, there could be add-ons to the match on a summers day which could involve a more family orientated club. Great idea Matt, I would certainly be in favour.
In the past I’ve always believed in the tradition of winter football, played in all weather conditions, but lately that’s just not been happening. Agree with Matt’s point about the cold beer, but will we be left with large stocks of Bovril, that doesn’t taste the same on a hot summer evening? Makes sence switching in 2022 as we don’t want to lose maybe half of our team to international duty.
A lot of lads play cricket in the summer or go to watch it, I know I do. Summer football sounds okay but I am not sure it is a “Goer”.
I played cricket to county level at school and club level and do miss it now I’ve stopped playing but given the choice of a warm July Saturday afternoon or pleasent August evening watching the Albion over a wet November Saturday afternoon or freezing January evening I know where I’d be .
I like watching cricket in the summer but it’s times like these when I realise what would be more important to me.
We lose a large number of fans to local big teams both through actually going to the games and Games on TV in the regular season, to me giving local fans a summer fix of football if only for a couple of months makes perfect sense.
Excellant suggestion and very well put .
