i called down at the ground this afternoon, to see sprucie, he is a good boss but shouts alot.
anyway when i got their, there was not 1 or 2 or even 3 wittoners working on the ground but SIX all working away because they love the club, what a bl##dy good effort lads.
The difference of the next game being on or off is absolutely massive. FCUM have about 1000 fans at Saturday away games, compared with about 200 at mid-week re-arranged away games.
If Saturday’s games gets called off because of the state of the pitch, it could cost us 800 fans. Times that by £9, and it puts the work these volunteers are doing into perspective.
If the game is off, I am in no doubt that we will fall well short of our budget for this season, and to get the budget back in line, will mean more cuts in players budgets.
Keep up the good work!!!
Just a thought, does anybody know were we can get hold of some large tarpaulins, just in case the temperature drops towards next weekend? Are there any other contingency plans we can make?
Good post Tony, it is easy for people to forget how much work goes on almost everyday of the week behind the scenes at the club.
When I called in at lunchtime Sprucie and Lomas were hard at work on the pitch, which despite being played on yesterday and being very wet is in excellent shape.
A big thanks needs to be given to Scott and Jeff who worked yesterday morning (from early on) and again most of today repairing the floodlights. Where there was darkness there is now light (pretty much like our season)!!! The guys have done a cracking job to restore existing lamps to working order and the light levels will be dramatically improved now.
There were no doubt other people at the ground to see (Tony included) who I didn’t see, all putting in vital work, who equally deserve to be mentioned and thanked.
If anyone has time they can spare at weekends there is always a list of jobs to be done (and Sprucie does not shout that much)!!!
I know previously Andy Chad has mentioned he provided the Club with some covers when he was at Jack Richards. Not sure if these are still knocking about?
The are some makeshift tarpaulin sheets that are located near to the shed area (by the outdoor enclosed storage area behind the bar - Sprucie knows where they are).
These are heavy to move and dirty (I know because Crouchy, Richard, Sprucie and I moved them from the cinder track at the side of the pitch before the season started).
They would potentially be useful to cover the goalmouth areas if nothing else. Given the size of these it would need some volunteers to help shift them and put them in place. It would be worth talking with Sprucie/Tony and Lomas before Thursday as it may be good to put them in place then (after the team has trained if they are using the pitch)!
These would probably not help too much to combat frost, but would help to deal with the goalmouths getting waterlogged.
