Whitley Bay vs Witton Albion (Emirates FA Challenge Cup First Qualifying Round).

Witton begin their Emirates FA Challenge Cup campaign on Tuesday night, when they make the long trip north to Northern League side Whitley Bay in the First Qualifying Round. The Seahorses are a couple of weeks ahead of Albion in their respective seasons but have had a couple of league games postponed so far. Qualification for this stage of the competition has seen the North East club through two rounds having beaten Garforth Town 3-0 away from home in the Extra Preliminary Round, before receiving a bye in the Preliminary Round due to opponents Dunston’s withdrawal from the competition. The two sides have met twice before in the FA Cup and Witton have had the upper hand on both occasions, winning 4-1 at Hillheads Park in 1991/92 and then triumphing 4-2 at Wincham Park ten years later. Whitley Bay have faired much better in the FA Vase in recent years and have won the competition four times but their run in this year’s competition was brought to a halt at the first hurdle at the weekend as they were shocked by Newcastle University. Witton will want to put their disappointing start to the season behind them following the home defeat at the hands of Whitby Town, a result the Seasiders deserved on the day. Northern League clubs always provide tough opposition and Whitley Bay will be no different. There has to be a result on the night with the game being decided on penalties after normal time if the scores are still level. Kick Off at Hillheads Park is 7.45pm.
