Winsford United v. Witton Albion - Stephen Wright Memorial Shield.(PSF)

Witton make the short trip to Winsford United on Tuesday night for their third pre season friendly, although the two teams will also be contesting the Stephen Wright Memorial Shield.

The inaugural match was played back in 2023 following the sad passing of a very much respected volunteer at the Barton Stadium Stephen Wright, who also doubled up as the announcer on matchdays.

The first game was settled in Winsford’s favour by a single goal from Tom Stanton and they will be hoping to retain the shield in this game.

Witton’s pre season has seen a positive start with a win and a defeat from their opening two games.

Winsford will be playing their fourth pre season game following outings against Lostock Graham, Leek Town and Crewe FC.

The games have seen a mixture of results with a win, a draw and a defeat so far.

The game sees two of Witton’s new signings face their former employers for the first time namely Danny Kerr and Ollie McDonough.

Former Albion wing back Ewan McGeady has remained at Barton Stadium so could come up against his former team.

Another tough test for Witton but another opportunity to get more match fitness and minutes into the squad.

As we are contesting a shield, should the game be drawn after normal time penalties will decide the winners.

Kick off at Barton Stadium is 7.45pm.

Witton are next in action when they travel to Runcorn Town on Saturday for a 3pm kick off.

Waste of time that friendly, we never show up and true to that we were awful again.

Learnt nothing, enjoyed nothing apart from our shape which we have played for 3 games now!

It doesn’t work, didn’t work last year either it just leaves big gaps at the back especially if the wide men don’t defend.

Go back to 4 3 3 we seem to be able to play that.

Well that was a terrible display from Witton, I wonder if they did not want to commit on that very bumpy pitch?

The chances we created we didn’t finish, we have to put our chances away.

Not too worried, it’s all about fitness at the moment but I did expect a lot more from Witton last night.

Very difficult conditions though let’s be fair.

There was a player who finshed the game wearing the captain’s armband like on saturday, he was always affecting the game.
