Workington 1-2 Witton Albion

Witton made the 150 mile trip North for the final game of the season and saved there best until last with a tremendous battling and footballing performance which began as early as 5mins when Hamlett put in a curling free kick which found its way to 26 year old Josh Maddock who scored he second goal in 4 games to give the albion the lead. Albion dominated early exchanges with Hindley and another young gun, 17 year old Tieney giving a very mature performance in the middle of midfield, Witton pressed and harried and could have given themselves more breathing space when Simmons, Swann and Mills linked up well to make a chance for swann who was denied by a good save from the keeper on 40mins. The Half ended 1-0 Albion
The second period began with disaster for albion after just a minute from the restart Workington were level, c corner swung in wasn’t dealt with and the man at the back post bundled the ball over the line at the second attempt to make the game all square after 46mins. Witton’s resolve was tested and the response was magnificent the battle and passion grew stronger and Albion again took at foothold and the impressive Hindley was pulling the strings and played in Mills who raced clear of the back for only to be denied by the keeper, however the same combination worked again on 60mins when Mills latched on to a Hindley through ball and this time from an acute angel gave a composed finish to give Albion the lead again 1-2. Still Albion pressed with Swann who’s running at Full backs was causing no end of problems and he made himself a chance on 65 mins only to be denied again by the keeper. Again Swann causing problems dribbled at already booked Workington centre half who then did a frustrated tackle and was given a second booking on 70mins to leave them a man light with 20mins to play. Witton retained the ball well after this and had further chances to go more ahead but with no scares at the other end held on for a deserving victory at the Conference North Outfit.
Witton had their most pleasing performance and result of the season, to make the 300 mile round trip worth it for everyone involved and gave a very positive feel to the end of the season.
