A severely hung-over Witton Albion side struggled through 26 pain-staking minutes on Sunday, as a veritable avalanche of goals flew past stand-in keeper Tom Green.
Missing from the starting outfield line-up on Sunday were a host of top performers, including; Prew, Blundell, Haspell, Green, and Robinson. Also missing were keepers Johnson and Crouch, with a dissappointing no-show from Nelson. All in all this presented Witton with a small mountain to climb as their increasing band of loyal followers watched on.
Despite the depleated nature of the Witton line-up, it was actually the red n white dynamite who set the early tempo of the game. Knight was linking up well with the 2 Carter brothers, and Marshall was roaming the pitch with an aura of a young Ray Wilkins about him - with some excellent forward running almost culminating in a breath-taking left foot volley into the top corner, which was unfortunately kept out by the AFC goalkeeper. Unfortunately, this miss was to prove costly as AFC soon took the lead.
With too many Witton bodies failing to put in a telling tackle, AFC managed to get a shot on target which Green could only get finger-tips to but was unable to keep it out. Within minutes AFC had made it 2, and by half time Witton’s game plan had been undone.
The introduction of player-manager Robinson at half time was unable to stem the tide, as AFC soon made it 3 nil. At this point though Witton began to get a stronger foothold into the game. Young international modelling sensation Shaun ‘Kate Moss’ Carter was in fine form, but just couldn’t get the goal he so clearly deserved. Eventually it was GI Knight who earned the wages that our taxes are paying, by rolling the ball into the unguarded net after young Carter had laid the ball across the edge of the area for him. 3 - 1, and Witton back in the game.
Albion continued to pile the pressure on, valiantly looking for a second goal that would really give their adoring fans a much-needed glimer of hope. However, as Witton went for the kill at one end, AFC broke at the other and it was heart-break for Witton as AFC not only made it 4 - 1, but then rubbed further salt in the wounds by making it 5 just before the end.
So, two consecutive defeats now for the Albion - and with Tom Green potentially out for the season - some might say that that the future is looking grim. However, with several key players due back for Saturday’s friendly match, the tide could be just about to turn back in Witton’s favour… Watch this space…
