Match Rating ****
With the contorversial decision to start Mike Blundell in place of Tom green being made at 2am in a Scarborough hotel room, there were certainly a few raised eye-brows at 3.30pm on Sunday. However, within a matter of minutes Blundell had done enough to earn his start as he put the ball in the back of the AFC net whilst falling to the ground - celebrating with a clenched-fist raised high into the air.
With AFC having won all previous encounters between these two sides - scoring 3, 4, and 5 goals in the last few meetings - it was clear that Witton would have to withstand a heavy onslaught if they were to hold on to the lead. However, it is testament to the desire amongst the team to claim the 2 points that goalkeeper Drew Haspell never really had a save to make in a frantic first half. AFC piled forward in wave after wave of quick attacks, but the Witton midfield and defense held firm, and with forward Andy Chadwick playing as the team’s first defender further up the field, AFC were never allowed to settle on the ball and as a result every attack petered out before threatening the Witton goal.
At the other end, Chadwick was tirelessly chasing down every direct ball played out of the Witton defense, using all his experience and guile to try and stay one step ahead of the super-quick AFC defensive pairing.
At half-time, Witton lead 1 - 0.
The second half began with the restoration of the Robinson-Marshall defensive partnership, the self-proclaimed ‘clean-sheet specialists’. Some boast to make, but could it possibly ring true in the biggest game of Witton’s season?! Witton certainly began the second half looking much more comfortable, with Tom Green beginning to make his mark on the game. However, it was Chadwick who had the first opportunity to double the lead - but his excellent strike was turned away by an even more impressive save from the AFC keeper.
Chadwick didn’t have long to wait though before claiming yet another goal of a prolific season so far. An excellently-weighted long ball from Marshall fell invitingly into the bath of Chadwick, who hit it on the half volley to leave the keeper with no chance. Yet another excellent and oh-so-important strike from the much-travelled attacker.
Witton had every reason to expect AFC to throw the kitchen sink at them, but in all honesty there was little to worry the Witton back line at all. With Prew yet again having an excellent game, aswell as Blundell and Carter doing the leg work, it was infact Witton who should of increased their advantage. With Tom Green now playing upfront, he received the ball and hit a rasping shot that looked to be going in - but instead struck the post and rolled across the face of goal. It would of been a well-deserved goal as Witton were displaying a level of team-work that shoudl stand them in good stead for the remainder of the season.
AFC did manage to fashion one opportunity near the end. As Marshall played a ball into Blundell, everyone present was horrified to see the firey midfield battler busily arguing with an AFC defender, and as he failed to see the ball coming to him, AFC quickly intercepted and played the ball forward to their clinical striker who ran onto the ball, but with Haspell advancimg from his goal-line the shot was placed wide of goal - and Witton’s clean-sheet was preserved.
So all in all, an excellent performance. This has to go down as Witton’s best display since they began playing back in February. It is worth noting that this was AFC’s first defeat of the season, and they had previously only conceded 4 goals in 9 games. Everybody contributed, and everyone deserves their fair share of credit. Including Big Stu, who despite being an unused sub was positive throughout and offered support from the sidelines.

Best Moment
The sense of achievement at full-time.
Worst Moment
Blundell arguing and almost costing a goal!!
Obviously a very good idea to keep off the alcohol prior to this crucial match. I heard mooted that some players would have settled for the statutory 0-5 score bearing in mind previous experiences playing this feared team. Great therefore to tear themselves away from the heaven that was Whitby & Scarborough and rush back to complete this fixture.
Any chance of getting the link to details on this league. Would be interesting to see the table etc. Seem to recall that there was a website last season.

What was Chad doing in the bath??!!
I’m still buzzing lads. What a performance, it was a pleasure to be part of it. I can’t wait for next week
Tremendous effort lads from everyone involved. First team, reserves and supporters team all winning consecutive games!!!
This underlines the importance of teamwork and working hard on the pitch from each other. Now is the time to drive even further forward - get the communication, planning, preparation and organisation even better.
Awesome result on Sunday, well done.
In the last 4 games we’ve won 3; scored 9, and conceded only 1. Two of the teams we have beaten are teams that we have never previously managed to win against.
Excellent TEAM performance and special mention to Si Gregory for the off the field performance/changes being made at the right time etc!
Topped a great weekend off!
Watched my first match, not the Brazil style I had been expecting, but the commitment, teamwork and effort was 100%. Well done lads
Tactics were slightly different than usual due to the quality of the opposition!! Fortunately the end justified the means.
