A very professional Witton performance saw them keep the pressure on leaders Winsford, with the 2 sides set to meet next Sunday.
Ian Grassby became the 22nd player to feature for Witton this season, and the 32nd overall. He also managed to nudge the average age up a little closer to bus pass territory…
In truth the first half was quite a cagey affair. Witton moved the ball well, and Tom Green managed to test the keeper on several occasions, but neither side really looked like breaking the deadlock. So at half time the scores were tied at 0 - 0.
Witton started the 2nd period as much the better team. With the bronzed Shaun Carter now playing off Tom Green, extra space began to develop in midfield. A reduced-lung-capacity-busting run from the back by Grazzer was spotted by Green, who played the chain-smoking veteran in to open the scoring with a rasping shot that hit both posts before crossing the line.
Before long it was 2 - 0, as a ball was played into Green’s feet that was crying out to be held up - only for Green to audaciously use the outside of his boot to flick the ball behind him and into the HTID goal. A sublime goal, and only the famously-arrogant Green would surely dare such a thing? Unless it was just a fluke…
At this point HTID began to lose their cool… A seemingly harmless incident by the touchline saw ‘Popper’ launch an avalanche of abuse at the Ref, which was about to earn him a yellow card. However, his reaction to this was to kick the ball over the fence, and therefore he quickly saw the yellow card turn to red, and it was game over for the mouthy little git.
This allowed Robinson the opportunity to give himself his first run-out since the last time these 2 sides met, and he quickly got himself involved in the attacking half of the field. An inch-perfect pass to Shaun Carter set the young Torres-a-like on a jinking run, that finally saw the ball despatched into the HTID goal for 3 - 0. A great run and finish, but - much like Maradona’s goal against England at Mexico '86 - it was clearly the pass that made it…
At 3 - 0 Witton should of just shut up shop, but a moment of madness saw HTID grab an undeserved goal - which was possibly scored from within the area.
There was still time for one final incident, as Mike Blundell got himself involved in some handbags - not for the first time this season of course!!
