Witton Rating ***
Match Rating ****
Att - 1
Witton remained unbeaten, but had to rely on a fantastic last-minute equaliser to secure a point.
Witton again started sluggishly, with the defense again seeming to struggle to work as a unit. As a result, it was no real suprise that Knutsford were the first to score. However, where Witton would previously have surrendered the game after going behind, they now have the character to bounce back - and before long Blundell had hit his first of the season to level things up.
Witton began the 2nd half much better, and soon found themselves 2 - 1 up when Carter pounced to put the ball into the Knutsford net. All Witton had to do at this point was hang on for the win, but were unfortunately guilty of reckless defending once again as Knutsford raced into a 3 - 2 lead with just minutes left on the clock.
Things seemingly went from bad to worse for Witton when Blundell reacted badly to a clumsy challenge, and got himself sent off for launching a tidal-wave of expletives at the referee. Luckily for Witton, the Knutsford play-maker was also sent off for the initial challenge.
And so with just seconds left on the clock Witton took the last(minute) train to Clarkesville, as Adam Clarke carried the ball before hitting an un-stoppable shot from distance to claim a share of the spoils for Witton. Cue scenes of jubilation on the sidelines as Witton did enough to remain top of the table after 5 games.
Yet again it seems as though the defence gets a slating. Even though the goals were 3 on 2’s as they broke down the pitch to catch us on the counter…
I’ll admit to our defence being somewhat like Witton’s - not the quickest in speed - thus there is only so much we can do, two of us cannot always defend against three attackers. Especially against a player who is almost as good as Prew.
A couple of things were tried out yesterday, some worked, some didn’t. Thought we looked a bit disjointed and unorganised in patches but we came through it alright in the end. Their main player is different class and we struggled to contain him, I hoped extra pace at the back would stop him (that’s why I took myself off for Masher) but he was still too quick! Great finish from Adam to nick us a point at the end, a real indication of what he is going to be capable of.
Next week is a massive game against Winsford, don’t think we’ve managed to beat them yet so bring it on!
Bottom line, if we/me had taken our numerous chances we’d have been out of sight, absolutely fantastic last minute goal by Clarkey to rescue a point though!
Like the 1st team - be positive we’re unbeaten this season!
