Man Of The Match - ‘Super’ Michael Moseley.
With the sun blazing down on a record crowd of 20 - including a packed-to-the-rafters Bulmers Family Enclosure - Witton Albion Supporters FC claimed their first clean sheet of the season. With Marshall and Robinson again forming an excellent partnership at the back, it is now almost 50 minutes since the Witton defense was last breached. This alone would of been ample cause for celebration, but of course there were other headlines to be written. Firstly, Tom Green claimed his 9th goal of the season, and young slightly-effeminate Shaun Carter grabbed 2 expertley taken second half goals to justify his manager’s faith in selecting him ahead of the fit-again Mike Blundell. Other than that, it was quite a dull afternoon down at John Deane’s…hang on a minute, no it wasn’t. I almost forgot…
Lining up for the Albion one final time was the White Pele, Super Mike, him of very fertile loins. Yes, everyone’s favorite scorer of 5 yard tap-ins - Michael ‘147’ Moseley. Handed the captaincy in recognition of his acheivements with the Witton First Team, young Mike lead the line with vigour. Within minutes a fairy tale start unfolded, as Witton won their first ever penalty when the young Northwich defender encroched into the penalty area. With the crowd up on their feet to see Moseley roll the ball home controversey began to unfold as Super Mike handed the ball to Green. As Green placed the ball the anger from the crowd was clear as boos rang out around this magnificent stadium. Sensing a potential crowd disturbance, young Moseley quickly reversed his original decision and agreed to take the spot kick - rifling the ball into the keeper’s top right-hand corner - 1 nil (148 career Albion goals).
As Witton continued to apply pressure, it was clearly only a matter of time until the score was doubled - but when the goal came nobody present would of been expected to have guessed it would be such a memorable strike. The agile figure of Green lobbed a perfectly weighted ball over the Northwich defense for Moseley to run onto (yes folks, he does actually run…), and the veteran striker lifted the ball over the advancing keeper and into the unguarded net for one of the best goals you are likely to see at this level - 2 nil (149 career Albion goals). Still before half-time there was still time for another goal, as this time the slender-framed Number 9 turned provider, slipping the ball to Green who sent a rasping shot straight at the keeper. Luckily, the ball rebounded back to Green who ferociously despatched the ball into the far corner of the goal. Unstoppable - 3 nil.
With Crouch starting the second half in nets for Northwich, the angle was going to appear narrowed from whichever way Witton approached the goal. However, this wasn’t to stop the ongoing massacre as Moseley collected the ball after a good save from Crouch and rolled the ball into the empty net from a matter of inches - 4 nil (150 career Albion goals). With tomorrow’s headlines seeminly already written, the game came so close to becoming the Shaun Carter Show as Shaun danced his way through the Northwich defense (less camp than his efforts at his Dad’s 40th i wish to add), to make it 5 nil with a perfect curling effort into the bottom corner of Crouch’s net. Moments later he made it 6 with his second of the game, another excellent goal that had to be seen to be believed.
With the crowd still catching it’s breath from Carter’s viruoso 5 minutes, Robinson took the opporunity to give Moseley the send-off he’d so craved in May. With a minute left on the clock Moseley was subbed to a standing ovation from both spectators and players, to depart the pitch victorious once more in his cherished Witton Number 9 shirt. 150 competitive goals and out. Mike Moseley - we salute you!
