After a week of unrest at Witton Albion Supporters, it was important that the players redoubled their attempts on the pitch and extinguished the fires of revenge that were evidently burning within some of the Northwich United players following their two drubbings at the hands of Witton earlier in the season. It was fair to say that on that front it was mission accomplished.
The Northwich players had unfounded arrogance in abundance before kickoff, and openly declared to the Witton players that they were going to win. A foolhardy boast from a side who had shipped 14 goals against the Albion in 2 games this season.
Witton had a big boost before the game, when mercurial midfield maestro Tom Green was passed fit to play, having shaken off his ankle injury.
Green once again had the opportunity to combine with the precociously talented Shaun Carter in midfield, a partership which has decimated all comers in the last few weeks. With the solid defensive triumvirate of goalkeeper Nelson, and defenders Scott Carter and Simon Gregory, and the guile and presence of Mike Blundell up top, it seemed unlikely that Witton would miss player/manager Mark Robinson and defensive stalwart Greg Marshall. However, in the first few minutes Witton lived on the edge and were twice lucky not to get punished for some rather slipshod defending as the absence of the established duo was temporarily exploited. It would not be noticed again.
Slowly but surely, the greater experience and flair of the Witton players began to shine through, and a fantastic move from back to front resulted with Blundell presenting Green with a glorious chance to open the scoring and claim his 10th goal of the season. As the defender came across to make a despairing block, Green sold the him the most outrageous of dummies, dragging the ball back when he seemed certain to shoot, and then placed the ball calmly in the bottom corner. 1-0. "SOLD TO THE MAN IN YELLOW!!" was the cry from Green to the young pretender, who lay motionless on the ground, seemingly unwilling to take the abuse directed at him from his equally embarrassed goalkeeper.
Witton had grabbed the game by the scruff of the neck, and were attacking at will. As they broke forward again, Shaun Carter played the most delicious of through balls to Mike Blundell, who controlled expertly with his thigh, and lashed a shot into the top corner from 15 yards. Stunning. 2-0. Blundell celebrated as only he can, by looking angry and kicking things. Stuart Jones was then given his opportunity to impress in the heart of the Witton defense, but when facing his first corner he elected to head the back of Scott Carter’s head rather than the ball and feel to the ground writhing in agony. Game over for Jones after 20 frantic seconds that started off with such promise but ended in disappointment. It happens to us all every now and then Stu, don’t worry about it. Half Time - Witton 2-0 Northwich Utd.
The second half started brightly for Witton, with Prew, the Carter brothers, and Green making life increasingly uncomfortable for the young back line of Northwich. Scott Carter was playing some fantastic football from the back and it was one of his diagonal passes that was helped on by his younger, more feminine brother into the path of Graham Prew who emphatically claimed his first goal of the season. 3-0.
Prew visibly grew in confidence, and after good work from Blundell and Shaun Carter, Prew bent an unstoppable shot into the top corner to make it 4-0.
The game was very much over for the plucky young lads of Northwich, and Green almost rubbed salt in the wounds when he attempted to lob the keeper from 20 yards, only to see his audacious shot clawed away by Northwich’s new signing, who was outstanding throughout.
All in all it was a performance of discipline and invention, with some fabulous individual moments of flair from the Witton team, after a week of uncertainty. job done, bring on GSE.
Full Time: Witton 4-0 Northwich Utd.
