Man Of The Match - Mike Blundell.
Missing talent such as Chadwick, Carter, Carter, Johnson, Wilson, Yoxall, Marshall and - as the team kicked off - Blundell and Crouch, Witton had every right to feel aprehensive going in to yesterday’s game against strong opposition. However, just as the teams were due to kick off spirits were lifted as someone shouted 'Here’s Mike Blundell!, and then just 5 minutes into the game ‘Here’s Crouchy!’. However by this point Witton had already found themselves a goal behind.
With a new-look back line of Gregory playing alongside debutant Adam Knight, Witton took too long to settle, and were undone by some slick passing by their opposition. Barely 5 minutes had past when the boys found themselves 1 - 0 down. After last week’s drubbing, and with the pressure unfairly mounting on manager Robinson during the past week, Witton could so easily of let their heads drop. However, with influential skipper Tom Green returning from his American adventure, and new signing Graham Prew pulling the strings in midfield, Witton were soon beginning to find their passing game. Chance after chance was fashioned, but Witton could not find that elusive equaliser - despite dominating for large periods. However, when eventually it came, it was well worth waiting for. After great work by Prew in the middle of the park, Green made a fantastic forward run and was picked out expertly by his team-mate. Brilliant finish - 1 - 1.
Within minutes it could of been 2 - 1 to the Albion, as Robinson broke from the back and was fed brilliantly by Scad. However, as Robinson’s rasping shot appeared to be arrowing into the bottom right-hand corner, the opposing keeper somehow managed to get a hand to it and push it away for a corner. That boy Robinson certainly can hit a ball.
As half time came and went it remained even. Witton continued to fashion the better opportunities, but with the roving figure of Crouch now playing upfront, they just couldn’t find the breakthrough goal. Eventually frustration got the better of Green who became involved in some pushing and shoving in the far corner. As players from both sides came together, angry and petulant words were exchanged all round. Eventually, with Blundell acting as peace-maker, the whole sorry mess was cleared up and play continued. Unfortunately with just seconds remaining on the clock, Witton’s back 2 found themselves with 4 players to deal with and conceded the winning goal.
Depite the obvious set-back of another defeat, Witton can take great heart from this game. With greater experience Witton will be able to cut out the errors that resulted in them conceding a goal both within the first few minutes of the game and also within the last. For the bulk of the game Witton were the better team, and now have a midfield that should be able to compete with any other at this level. If a natural goal-scorer can be found amongst the growing number of Witton Albion Supporters, then this team could really go places!
